I often read about those of us that have a bad neighbor. I do have one that I'm not too fond of but for the most part I'm really lucky. One of my neighbors and I have formed a good friendship over the years and we have worked on cars and projects together occasionally. He's a welding instructor and I'm an engineering tech. Our thinking while different really compliments each other. Generally when one of us has something that the other guy can use it's exchanged without thinking about money. There is always the big stuff that just can't go unpaid though. He's one of a very small handful of people that I give unrestricted access to any of my tools.

Just before Christmas I got a call from John to pop over. When I arrived he had a nice 40 x 40 fab table top tacked together and wanted opinions on a base and some other details. As I was about to head home he said this one is your Christmas present there is another for me over there. I was stunned. I was also concerned where I'd put it. After a chat I said I'd come up with a folding base so it could store easier. Well he took the design and built it too as a part of the table gift. Here it is mostly complete in his shop and it folds up pretty slick. I'm making up some dowel pins for jigging with and will come up with some other fixtures. Without a doubt an awesome friend and neighbor.

Very nice table indeed! Yeah that is worthy of a "You ****" award, but more so having a neighbor like that is worthy of the award also!

Great neighbor and great bench. Can we get a video of it being folded?, I'd love to see the mech working.

I'll try to get one. The geometry is pretty specific to a 40 x 40 table 6" thick. It yields a 36" table height and leaves enough room to fold down and for the caster system to retract. It's not perfect and takes a whack and kick to get everything engaged but it's really fast and pretty simple. One nice thing I didn't anticipate is that even folded out the balance is such that the casters can still be extended and the table rolled around without folding it all back up. When you design in CAD how things are going to actually work in the real world is not always apparent. For 3D to real world in one shot I'm very happy with the result.

Re: A seriously good neighbor!

Is this worthy of a "You ****!

This approaches double suckage  Most excellent. We don't really do doubles but if more stuff like this pops up GJ may need to go to an informal "SuckCon" set of levels.

That's awesome, and definitely a you ****. I used to have a neighbor like that when I lived in a subdivision in Indy. Not sure any of us gave each other anything quite that nice, but we had the combos to each other's sheds and if either of us needed to use something it was always ok because we knew the other would take care of it and return it.

I live in a more rural area where my closest neighbor is a fair distance off. I now have one decent neighbor they keep to themselves mostly, and every now and then we get together and have a good time over dinner. another house sits empty the guy who owned it passed away, and his kids haven't put it on the market yet, and the people who own the property surrounding me are horrendous. They are mad that his parents sold off several lots in the 60s and 70s.

But anyway congrats on the awesome fab table. Please post up some more photos and some projects you use it to work on..

Is the house on the other side of him for sale. Or maybe your neighbor wants to move here.

As a matter of fact there are 9 empty acreage lots for sale on the other side of him. The Sask economy is a bit warmer than Alberta's is. There's still work to be found around here!

This certainly deserves a You **** squared.

I have a very good neighbor who kept my lawn mowed last year while I was laid up from my foot surgery. He's also volunteered to help raise my shop roof. People like him are far & few between and worth their weight in gold.

Sorry I can't share the files at this time but if that changes I'll let you know. I will work up a vid of it in action and can post a screen shot of the model for now

I managed to get my wife to shoot a couple of quick vids I'm uploading to Youtube. Ill post a link as soon as they are up. As for what I've built on it well my first project is just completed. Automotive rotisserie. It took a lot more than I thought for time. I found a cad model on the internet and worked up my own design from there. There is actually one part in mine from the original design. lol.

Our next project. Somebody guess what it is. It's 6 feet tall and weighs 800 lbs.

Ok stingray, that's a pretty dang cool power hammer. But WTH is it you built, that thing is crazy looking. I sure can't figure it out from those pictures.

The machine will be a reciprocating machine. Like a Pullmax or Trumpf. Will nibble, bead, texture, flange and shrink and more.

That is a rotisserie for my automotive projects. Will post a pic soon with a truck box on it.

If its a power hammer its a piss poor design. I can mod it into an English wheel or maybe even a 3 wheeled metll cutting bandsaw if( when or if it fails its original design ?

Very lucky!

I also have good neighbor's around me. Have only owned my home for a month now, but I don't foresee any problems whatsoever.

So the machine John an I are also building is a reciprocating machine. The lower tool holder is adjustable on all axis. The ram is variable stroke 0 to 1/2". The ram is quick release with depth adjustment. The frame is tall throat so complex compound shapes can fit in to be worked. A typical Pullmax type Machine has a vertically short throat.

it's powered by a 2 hp 3 phase motor with a vfd for speed control. Standard 3/4" tooling fits into the tool holders and both the ram and lower tool holder have adjustments for depth of tool into the socket.

For those unfamiliar with this type of machine check out some Pullmax vids on youtube.

For Gittgo comments like piss poor design just piss me off. I have a huge time investment in designing the machine. Lets see the stuff you've designed and are building. We looked at everything out there and then put the best of it into what we wanted. It needed to have full adjustment, be something we could build ourselves, be big enough for larger hobbyist stuff but still fit in a hobbyist shop. My good buddy John has made a significant investment in parts to put 3 of them together. I might never have done this if it wasn't for him. Once again a great friend and neighbour.

Here's the billet aluminum con rod we machined on the CNC router where I work. It still needs to be trimmed out of the sheet it's tabbed into at this point. Got it to 3 thou which is pretty good for a router.

I'm still waiting for the vids I did of the table to process on Youtube. Been processing for over 10 hours now. Seems a long time for a 1 minute and a 40 second vid shot on my IPhone.

Nice welding table. Where'd you get it?

Moving to Saskatoon. Actually think of what it would be like if 10 or 15 of us lived on the same block.
