Got this hammer today. It is clearly shop made but very well done. The well fitted handle is marked AT&SF RY. It appears to be lathe turned. Both faces are about 9/16 inch in diameter, and it measures just about 12 3/4 overall. My first thought was that it was a riveting hammer but why go to the trouble of making a double faced one. Any idea what this really was for?

Although I can’t speak to your hammers intended use, I put a new handle on kind of a similar head for Tin Medic a couple of years ago. I assume that the initials on your hammer have something to do with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe railroad. Maybe the last letter stand for yard?

It's worked for everyone since the 1800's, Don! :)

Interesting that the head appears to be machined from solid and not forged to shape.
