I guess I used up all of my luck on that one cut.

The Old Mule had no compression in the rear 3 cylinders, and the brakes don’t work at all, so it was time to get everything fixed.


The valves are stuck on the 3 rear cylinders. Still trying to get them freed up. Since the head was off, I decided to use the impact to rotate the assembly while working the valves. BAD MOVE!! Snapped the head off of the crank bolt. The brand new cobalt drill bit wouldn’t even touch it. Called the professional mobile welder, and he came over and reattached the head.



The left rear hub wouldn’t come off heat and whacking it. So I got out the port-a-power, applied heat, then whacked it opposite the port-a-power. The hub told me it wasn’t happy when it came flying off and tapped me in the knee cap. I’m not sure, but I think the bearing is still usable. What do you think?

No way in hell would I reuse that "bearing"!

The knee only made me holler and skip around the shop for 2 minutes. Really looking forward to the BS3000. But like at your place, something else shuffled my deck. Got to get things planted.

That's what we, or at least I, assumed was the case since I've seen the odd post from you here and there. Posts on GJ in general seemed to have slowed down. It's just a busy time of year for most folks.

We are getting hammered here too in northern Indiana, started out as freezing rain yesterday then turned to snow in the evening and now we are getting 50 mph winds with brutal wind chills

Hey Guys, thanks for dropping by.

I'd say we got about 5" (about 12.5cm) of snow yesterday. Not horrible. 87 yr old neighbor lady has to go in for blood work tomorrow, so I plowed the edges of the road all the way to the main road (about 1 1/4 miles). It was fun to see the Old Mule pull +6" of snow (we got about 4" of snow followed by rain followed by more snow ealier in the week).

I'll be playing catch up posts as soon as I expand my desk in the shop (can't use the work laptop to post pics anymore).

Now rant time. Been looking forward to this 3 day weekend since before Thanksgiving. I worked steady every weekend, and every single day during the Christmas/New Years break (7 hours on Christmas day itself). I wanted to kick back, read a book, and maybe do a couple of very small jobs in the shop. But caught a lung full of burning Claudia wiring harness Wednesday night (a very long and ugly story), and it's put me in rough recuperation mode, coughing hard, runny nose. I am reading a book, but instead of relaxing I'm hacking up lungs. If I ever meet Murphy, I'm going to hurt my fist on his face...................repeatedly

No idea how much snow we've got, it's been really windy since Friday night so it's all drifted. At least the power came back on yesterday, the generator had been running for about 20 hours.

Ok, it's official, I'm not going to hurt my fist on his face. I'm going to ssslllooowwwlllyyy pull Murphy's finger nails out one at a time. Then I'll think of what I'm going to do to him next.

Tested positive for Covid. Wasn't smoke inhalation. I'm not horrible, just tired and always hacking up a lung. Glad I got this version and not the OG version. Still not fun, but it's not the end of the world.

You'll be fine in a couple of weeks. It's the cough that lingers. I had the OG version. While not a pleasant experience, it was a little worse than a bad flu, in my case.

I still can't smell certain things properly thanks to the OG version, makes diagnosing certain problems a bit harder when you can't use your super sniffer. I wish you a safe and speedy recovery.

The cough is the worst. I got it 12/5 went on Paxlovid and I think it helped but I had the cough all through the holidays. It’s taken a while to get my energy back. Don’t push it just relax when you need to. Hope you make a speedy recovery

Didn't figure out it was Covid until too late for the Paxlovid, thought it was breathing in fumes from the burning 80 year old wiring insulation.

Hard to tell if I'm tired from Covid or if it's just me. Been running ragged for the last year trying to get everything cleared off my plate so I can start my hot rod diesel '52 Chevy COE build.

Stealing a line from the work out nuts that I follow on IG. "It's not about motivation, but about dedication". But I have to learn how far to push, and when to let up.

Sorry to hear about the 'vid. Candidly, from close family members, I have my doubts on the efficacy of the Paxlovid, but I'll temper my comments on that.....

Regarding the shed build, I get your struggles.... I do wonder if you would consider hiring some guys to at least get the trusses set and the sheet metal on the roof and ideally on the walls as well? Then you could focus your efforts on the concrete and inside finishing work.

In full disclosure, my brother and I had a Foltz building put up on our place in SD. 50x96. The guys came in and set up the whole building shell in 3 days. Yes, 3 days for a crew of 4 to completely put up the laminated vertical columns, purlins, roof trusses, more purlins, sheet metal and trim, etc. The crew had a backhoe tractor with a boom for setting trusses, a platform for accessing the roof, and a platform for assisting with sliding the sheet metal up. They were efficient, tidy and good at it.

The door company came and installed the two overhead garage doors.

Thereafter, my bro and I prep'd for plumbing, electrical, hydronic heat and the concrete. We had a crew place the first 36 by 50 pad of concrete. My bro and I then built a mezzanine and did the internal insulation, ceiling metal sheeting, blow-in insulation, etc.

Alternatively, I did build my entire garage here in PA, but I also took time to purchase, set up scaffolding, lift plat form on the forklift, chicken ladder for roof, etc. It definitely took some time.

Kirk, sorry you got the c. But you describe exactly how I got after I had it. Some days I don't even get out of the house, It's hurting my plans, because I have a hot rod on hold also! I don't like how I've become.

Too late on the trusses. Finshed 85% of the perlins (still have the peak yet to do) and 40% of the girts just as I got sick. If it doesn't rain/snow heavy next weekend, I'll finish the perlins.
