Sub, I love your thread, it reminds me of what my priorities should be, I appreciate your inspiration. So the honor is all mine.
As for my friend from down under, ½, I’m just trying to get to ½ your speed.
And COB, my chains have been laying on the floor. It wasn’t to awful bad during the winter, but in the summer the tractor tire chains were a big mess. Since Robin has the alphabet soup after her last name, organizations love to invite her to all of their conferences and I go along for the price of a plane ticket. And as far as interior home improvement goes, I don’t mind the rough work, but you and Robin are welcome to it.

You have to love getting to travel on the spouse's good deeds. My wife had a conference in Washington DC last summer that would either pay her airfare or mileage AND parking. I got to take the trip for just doing the driving and my meals. As I told her, I can eat cheap. We did get tired of the hotel's brunch spread by the end of the week. We were blessed on our way home to take a side trip that we will never forget to Shanksville, PA to the memorial site there. It was a side trip we will neither one forget.

I totally agree with you Kenny. Milwaukee was a car trip for us and I really enjoyed being able to get out and see the country side while my best half was occupied with her conferences. We're headed to Houston in early March. I'll have to try and remember to head to Shanksville when we head that direction.

So the busy pace continues. Here’s the latest project, a bench for my lathe. I finished the frame Sunday and Monday I started on the top. The center section is dropped down and I’ll put a backsplash and ends on it with a small lip on the front. It should make keeping it clean easier………I hope. The top will have 3/8” plywood topped with 1/8’ plate. We’ll see how it works in the end. The plans in my head look better than the plans I have on paper, so I’m not holding my breath.

And the Robin/kitchen counter project continues. She’s nearing the end. I think she’ll finish the grouting today and hopefully seal it (the grout) before the weekend. There’s a leak to fix on the left drain and then she should be done with the project, just in time for her to start prepping for Science Olympiad.

So, the lathe bench is far enough along that I can set the lathe on it……….I hope. I got to break in a new-to-me tool in building the backsplash. I got this Whitney punch for $25. Anyway, two coats of brushed on gray Rustoleum covering the black powder coat tin and bare metal helped brighten it up a ton and should keep things from getting rusty. And wouldn’t you know it, as I’m drilling the holes for the left latch, my suspenders put the first scratch in the paint. It won’t be the last, but I was hoping it would at least last until I started turning my first piece. I still want to put pegs to hold a bench brush and chuck key(s), but it should be good enough for me.

Thanks for dropping by Sean, they look a whole lot better in the pictures than they do in real life.

The table's going to get a ton more scratches once I start using it, so it's good enough for what it is and who it's for.

I did get some great ideas in the thread where I asked for suggestions on the build. Look for them to show up here soon.

That's a Great looking bench. If it was in my shop it would look awesome... do you deliver? :D

I haven't seen a punch set in the box like that for a long time. My uncle had it in his shop when I was growing up...

I get an email every week from the GJ and I follow along but there comes a time when I have to be honest and say your projects look great to me! If only I had the time to do more...

Thanks guys for the at-a-boys on the bench. It's too light weight, has a light shake if the lathe is turning. I've got some rusty old 1/4" plate I'll weld to the ends and back to stiffen it up. Also, someone suggested that I shouldn't have put the hopper in it because I'll need the space to put "stuff". They were right, so I'm adding a shelf to the right corner. But I've already used it for a couple of small parts. It's going to come in handy. It's allowing me to channel my inner Vieux.

Here’s the first real piece I’ve made with the lathe. The late FiL cut the center out of a wheel, don’t ask me why. Anyway, the pair is perfect for a wagon build I have rolling around in the back of my head. So I went to Alro, bought this chunk of tubing, and turned it down to fit. A big tack weld and threw the assembly back on the lathe and got the runout down to about 10 thou. Finish the welding and it’s almost ready to rock. I’ll clean up the splatter and welds a tiny bit, hit it with some white paint, stainless fasteners and the wagon should be rolling.

I did make one other little piece on the lathe. My Dewalt right angle grinder wouldn't tightened against the thin cut-off disc, so I took a large washer and opened up the ID so it would act as a spacer.

I’ve been feeling a little worn out lately, so not as much has been getting done around the Princess Palace/Hack Shack. Not to say I was a total slouch. On my lathe bench thread, someone said I shouldn’t have made a hopper, because I’d need all that space for miscellaneous items. They weren’t kidding. Also, the backsplash was so flimsy, that every time I used the lathe it shook. So I grab some more or the display case tin, some ¼” rod and my trusty “new” Whitney punch. A new shelf, some hanging pegs, and a tin gusset for the back splash are now in place. The bench is fairly stable left to right, but back and forth seems to have a little movement. I head over to the stock rack and grab a left over piece of rusty ¼ “ plate my dad drug home for me and after a ½ hour with the flap wheel I have gusset I’m going to weld to the ends of the bench. And last, but not least, the finished thank you plaques for the people at work who saved my hide. We went from being sourced with no design to having parts on cars in just over 2 months. These people worked their butts off. But back to my first statement, even if I’m not doing anything, remember I’m not totally useless. I can always be used as a bad example.

Just to let you know guys that I do eventually get to things. The truck has been sitting in the corner of the barn for about 6 years, Thursday night I finally got the motor out of it. Next on the list is repairing the rotted out portion of the core support. I hope I can get this thing moveable under its own power by the end of spring.

so due we now need to hold you to task on this?:D

Been sitting for 6 years and now your gonna having it function under its own power in about 4 months?::scared:

I'm pulling for you to get this done that is for sure!:D

hopefully my tongue in cheek comments help keep the motivational fire lit and you keep making progress on this!:willy_nil

of course having it sitting at the top of the hill and coasting to the bottom is moving under its own power so there is alway's that!

Best of Luck!

Sublime Out!

Thanks for the encouragements guys.

F150 I'm guessing?

You got it, '03 Screw that I shaved and dropped.

That's a Ford with the magic spark plugs... :D

Actually its had 5 magic plugs, #2 and #7 each went once, and number #3 went 3 times, the last time I wasn't able to remove it from the timesert. That along with a probable blown head gasket, I'm calling it done.

Are you going back in with a replacement motor or rebuild of the original? What's your overall goal for the truck? Hot Rod or daily driver?

I'm going with a replacement motor. SBC/F and simple 4 cylinders, I'm fine with rebuilding, but I want this one done and no issues. This was my old DD, but I drive too far to make it feasible, so it's going to go to my daughter. I promised she could have it when she got her drivers license and now she's a junior in college. I can never seem to get my timing right. :headscrat:dunno::lol:

My wife and the girls have been running me ragged. Orchestra Festival and dance competition this past Saturday. Booking hotel and rental car for the upcoming Houston trip. So, not much moving here. But I did “finish” one little project last night. I have a neighbor who has a few big rigs (he said 7 right now and working his way to an even dozen) and I saw some brake drums sitting outside his barn all winter. He said take them. So a bit of 3” tubing, some left over ¼” plate, and I finally have a stand for the little grinder my wife got me for Christmas. It’ll go over by the lathe, since I plan on using it to shape/sharpen my lathe and drill bits.
