Thanks for the encouragements guys.

You got it, '03 Screw that I shaved and dropped.

Actually its had 5 magic plugs, #2 and #7 each went once, and number #3 went 3 times, the last time I wasn't able to remove it from the timesert. That along with a probable blown head gasket, I'm calling it done.

Well I didn't know you got the deluxe package on that one. :eyecrazy: Bummer. I think I'd do the same w/ the replacement motor route.

Nice grinder stand dude!

Thanks for compliments guys, it means a lot to me. You guys are some of the people I admire most on this forum. I plan on making a similar stand for the little bench drill press and putting over in Robin's wood working corner.

Hey folks, let me tell you that I can’t wait for this week to finish. Dance comp last Saturday had us in Kzoo for most of the day. Then I sat in on a college class put on by one of my coworkers (that meant I ended up with about 3½ hours of sleep Monday night). Science Olympiad this weekend. Fly to Houston on Sunday.

But I did get a little done this past weekend. I used another brake drum and left overs to build a stand for my bead roller. I guess I'll need another drum for drill press. Then I started cleaning the summer wheels for the Orphan (OLD Saturn SL1). And before you think I’ve starting blowing money on expensive wheels and tires, the wheels and tires were given to me by my son who had a Honda CRX they came on.

What type/brand of bead roller do you have and how well do you rate it? I'd love to have one some day for my infrequent use. The challenge is to find one good enough to create decent personal work without spending a fortune on something.

Kirk, those wheels are nice. I helped a friend prepare his car for the World of Wheels in Miami a few decades ago. He turned a former drag race car into a nice street car (no such thing as Resto Mod back then). We did the black lacquer in his garage with a Harbor Freight pressure pot and Devilbiss gun. Won first in class against some pro-painted cars.

He paid $10 for that set of aluminum rims and that was high for the shape they were in. I spent a day sanding out the deep scratches and buffing the wheels with a buff wheel on a die grinder using some white compound. Final polish with Mothers by hand. Back then Harbor Freight was mail order only but that die grinder is still available for around $10 and the buffing equipment from Sears wasn't much more. If your wheels have clear coat, that would have to come off to really shine them up.

My wife got me a Woodward Fab for Christmas a few years back. I haven't used it much, but it'll do fine for what I want. I just want to put a little stiffness in replacement panels I'll have make. I'm not looking to do a ton of work with it. It's better quality than the Horror Freight English wheel I have and that works fine.

Ekstensive Metal Fab, and probably San Jancito(sp?) and the Battleship. I did Bruce's Rod shop today and then more sleeping. It was a rough weekend.

I'm using the Mother's Buffing cone to work these. I tried lacquer thinner to get the main stuff off, but it didn't even begin to touch the curd.

I've seen Woodward Fab products at car shows etc and it looks to be pretty good quality. Your description is exactly what I'm looking for too. Just some simple work for my own products. I'll have to give their product another serious look.

Dropped by Ekstensive Metal Fab today. Was a little disappointed that I wasn't allowed to walk around the shop, due to insurance. Most shops love to let you walk around, show off their work. The price of fame I guess. On the up side, they had 2 of their rides out in the parking lot that I spent some time looking at. Pappasito's for dinner last night was AMAZING. I'm still full.

I think it'll be just what I need. I do need to make some "art" dies. Just plain V's so I can do some fun stuff for my wife garden. Darn, that means I'll have to fire up the lathe and do more work.:(

A good job on the stands. The lathe is better used than sitting, I just don't have any room for bigger stuff, though I would like to try gaining skills for using a lathe or a milling machine. I have friends who have and use those, so I suppose that's the best way to roll, otherwise.

I may have missed it in other posts, are you a MSU guy, being close to E.Lansing? I see St. Johns is on US-127. We live close to the beginning of US 27, which I think the exit before I-94 and Marshall to the west is a sign for "Old 27." I went on the MI roadways website and saw that US 27 has been decommissioned, that's a shame. I consider it a road with a venerable history, crossing many states. The southern end of US 27 is very close to Biscayne Bay in Miami FL. The Miami Heat played the Cleveland Cavaliers last night, and Miami won, a good film of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade talking after the game. The end of US 27 is a couple of blocks from where the Heat play.

Bob did a good job on those old aluminum mags he polished for his friend. The style was very popular in the 1970's. I had a set on a Dodge Tradesman van I had, and they looked sharp. Ten bucks for a set of dirty wheels (Bob's friend's 'Vette wheels) is 'dirt-cheap!' Your wheels cleaned up well. A few rainstorms to wash-away the road salt, and you can safely return those to the roads. Ah, spring!

Driftpin, thanks for the compliment. I love these stands, they hit all of my requirements, quick, cheap, and very usable. I'm not a Sparty, but my wife and middle daughter are. Robin got all of her degrees from State and my middle daughter is finishing her freshman year there.

As for the Old US127/new 27(dumb joke based on the local signage), we live about 10 west. One of my bucket list drives is to start at the top of the lower peninsula and drive the entire length of US 27/127 and then return driving as much of Telegraph (US 24) as is left. Maybe I'll drop by when I'm down there.

As for our Houston trip, what a nightmare. Our flight was cancelled from Lansing to O’Hare, so we were given a cab ride to Grand Rapids. The trip back was delayed in Houston due to weather which caused us to miss the last flight to Lansing. That meant no dinner, a hotel stay on our dime, and no breakfast. GRRRRRR, I’ll never fly United again. But Houston was really nice. I went to Bruce’s Hot Rod Shop and saw this wicked cool 4x4 International. What a freakin’ monster. I already mentioned Ekstensive. And we went to the fossil exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural History. Robin said it was the biggest and best fossil exhibit she’s ever seen. I highly recommend the Indigo Hotel and the aforementioned Pappasito’s. OMG, Pappacito’s was amazing!!!!!!

Good grief guys, does it ever let up? The pace. Nothing significant done lately, just little bits and pieces everywhere. Last Thursday evening I put the power steering cooler in the TrailBlazer. Then over the weekend, I routed the AV cable from one side of the barn to the other (boy I hate crawling over fiberglass insulation).

I did get one of twins to come out and help with hot rodding the Fat Potato (old lawn tractor). We swapped out the drive pulley on the engine (going from a 3” to a 4 ½”). The thing still comes out of reverse/forward hard, so I’m looking into that. Also, the idler pulley was making a ton of noise, so I bought an idler pulley. The problem is that bore was too large and there was no offset. Luckily, TSC also has steel bushings of the right ID and a large OD, and I happen to have a lathe. So I had to break down and turn down part of the OD to match the pulley ID and get the proper offset. Dog gone it. It was horrible. And does the snow ever stop? The middle of April and we got roughly 3” of the white stuff.

Did I say Pappsito's was decent food?

So... did you have the table side guac at least once? All of the Pappa restaurants are great if you make back down their again. But Pappasito's is my favorite. If you ever have to go to Dallas on business, drop me a PM. There is a great little strip in one of the historic neighborhoods. A fantastic group of restaurants and bars. I'd have to look it up on Google maps again to find it. I liked it so much I used to fly into Dallas, stay nearby, and drive 4 hours to Houston and back. Fortunately I had a customer half way between the two cities as well so it made it easier. But I quit staying in Houston and just drove there from Dallas.

No, unfortunately we didn't do the Gauc, but when we go back, we will.
And seeing as my son and his family live in Killeen, I'm guessing there will be more trips to Texas.

xtremek great work on the idler pulley.

Thanks 1/2, any excuse to use the lathe is a good one.:bounce:

Still chugging along. This weekend I finished pulling out the rotted core support from the ’03 Screw. Building the new one should be a learning experience.

Middle of April snow and winter storms. It really does **** and not in the GJ good way either. I'm just traveling home from Boston and we got drowned in cold ice water rain all day today. I hear there is warmer weather predicted for the weekend and next week but I won't hold my breath waiting.
Not work there Doc, on the rust surgical removal.

Thanks guys for dropping by, and nice comments. I've never done anything this involved.

For those in warmer climates, for the middle April, we're way behind. Usually the temps are around 60F/15C, but we're around 30F/-1C with snow and freezing rain 3 out of the 4 last days. I think this is pretty typical of the northern states right now. But the shop has heat, so it's not too bad for me.

Thanks for dropping by GB, I’m still alive. Sorry for not updating more frequently, but life is very busy.
A couple of small updates. I finished cutting out the first of 4-6 pieces of the core support. Then I altered 2 of these coax/HDMI covers to also accept RCAs. Saturday my wife texts me this picture of the top of a willow tree that hit a family friend’s deck. So after running my errands, I dropped by and cut it up. Done in 2 hours…ish.

And I finally got around to taking off the winter tires. No wonder the car was a handful to drive in the last 2 snows, but I don’t understand why I can drive the speed limit on these tires and everyone else on the road is going 20 mph under.

I finished this quick project so I can use the tractor to move the trailer.

And lastly, it’s nice for the first time in 6 years that the tractor tire chains aren’t lying in a heap on the floor.

Another project I got off the list is moving the garden shed off trailer finally. Did it old school. Cut some pipe, shoved it under the sides, rolled it back until one end touched boards I laid down. Then I jacked the other end up, and drove the trailer out.

This weekend was another busy weekend, with a dance comp taking up all of Saturday. But I was able to get this shelf made for my wife. Solid copper, but the plan is to paint it black, and scuff the high spots so it matches the faucet.

Thanks for stopping in guys, and your compliments, they mean a lot to me.

I'm not as busy as it looks since the last five posts were for the last 2 weeks. I type up my updates ahead of time, then do my posting. I've been so busy at work (the only time I have a good internet connection), I didn't do my post from 10 days ago.

Another small update. Last night I put the last section of fencing back up. I had to take it down when I put the shed in the garden. Also, I started putting the center (chicken wire) into the small garden gate. The best part of spring for me is seeing the big boys play, but for me, I’ll be using the Troy Built tiller early next week.
