So while I was wiring in the trailer brake controller, and fixing the back up lights (just put them on an illuminated toggle), I thought I'd see why there was no dash lights. Do you think this might be the issue? But now the headlights don't work. Sigh. Since the dash was out, I thought I should clean the circuit "board".

I love it when the lighting is repaired. I did that a couple years back on my 76 Cutlass. I still reach in and pop the parking lights on in the garage just to admire the old skool lights.

That is probably the best statement ever. Now I feel like I have a purpose, “I procrastinate, so you can do.” The most selfless act any GJer can do for another.

Wiring is always a PITA, hope you can get it all figured out. Otherwise the rest looks great.

I'm not too worried about the headlights, they were working before the switch replacement. Guessing a pin pushed back in the connector.

I hear you. I still have to wire the two on the front of the box, and the side marker lights in the fenders.

Cue the Debbie Boone song.

Clue me in, which one. I know Debbie Boone, but not well enough to know her songs by name.

Kirk,
Good job on the wiring / lights.
I knew if i procrastinated long enough you would get it done. :rocker:

Jon, I still have quite a bit under the dash saved, JUST for you.

That is probably the best statement ever. Now I feel like I have a purpose, “I procrastinate, so you can do.” The most selfless act any GJer can do for another.

I so hear you on that S. But that's how we roll here on GJ, right? I mean I was nice enough to clear out a corner of the shop just so Jon could store either his Vega, or his Solstice.

Time for one of those digital gauge sets.

Kevin hear you on the Cutlass. Piece of art.

Digital gauges for this rust bucket, NOPE. This old beast is getting done on the CHEAP. Well, as cheap as I can and still make it reliable.

FYI, the list of electrical fixes so far;

new wiper/washer motor
new cab clearance lights
new box marker lights
new plate lights
new left tail light
new brake controller
new trailer connector (low mount/regular trailer)
new trailer connector (hi mount/goose neck)
new wiper switch
new light switch
clean dash circuit board
new back up light toggle switch
new wiring from firewall to the back
starter wiring

Electrical I still need to fix;

new old radio
fender marker lights
front box lights
head lights
speakers
temp gauge
volt gauge
gas gauge (I think I already fixed this, just need to verify)

I hope to have it usable and road worthy by Wednesday. I guess I'll be busy the next couple of nights.:(

Now I’ll have to search out that movie. My favorite car to drive at Drivers Ed was a Cutlass Supreme like that one.

Sent from my iPhone using Garage Journal

Thats the whole movie. Done on a lark by Kurt and Goldies daughter when she was getting into directing.

Ooo, that's a tall order. I'll procrastinate extra hard the rest of the week for you.

Good work getting all that electrical work done. I always procrastinate on wiring and sanding. My least favorite jobs.

I’d offer you some extra procrastination but then neither of us would get anything done!

No procrastination here. The BWW and I seem to be on the same page right now. I need to have it usable for this weekend.

In order to put the box guides where I wanted, I was “forced” to machine a relief into the left one. The horrible things I have to go through sometimes. Came out pretty nice.

The neighbor who came down to help me set the box on the truck needed some electrical work on his horse trailer (3 horse, tack room, living quarters) and brought it down. He bent the mailbox post turning in the driveway. Can’t even pretend to be mad, since he’s done so much for us, and I broke his bulldozer. Besides the posts were just scraps I had laying around.

If you know me at all, you know I’m inclined to do some very sketchy stuff. But this job had to be in the top 10. Under the fiberglass blanket is the gas tank. Yep, ran a 16”-18” bead on the upper hoist mount right over the top of the aforementioned gas tank. Didn’t need to change my underwear though.

He broke my mailbox, I broke his dozer...... Sounds fair to me. ;)

The relief cut almost looks like you knew what you were doing. If you want to be extra safe if there is a next time, I would put a wet towel on top of the fuel tank under the fiberglass blanket, seems to help keep any fumes down as well.

When I was a teen, I was removing a pickup truck bed on an old chevy, I caught the body mount on fire, the one near the fuel tank. I couldn't get the rubber to stop burning and the fire extinguisher did no good. Ended up catching the fuel lines on fire, truck was running, radio was on, I pulled the truck away from the shop totally expecting a movie type explosion. The truck ran, the fire burned, about an hour later, the truck stopped, the fire went out, the radio kept going. I let it sit for a while before going near it. I considered myself lucky and I don't mess with fuel tanks anymore.

Messing with gas tanks does have a tendency to make me cringe, just a little. But your story is so scary, it's funny.

Had something gone wrong you wouldn't have had underwear on anyway.

The box wouldn’t lift with much of a load in it, so I called the manufacturer. They told me they don’t do retail anymore, but they recommended Mason Dynamics in Comstock Park (Grand Rapids). Thursday I talked to Jim at MD, and after a discussion he came to the conclusion that I was a nut case (“next you’ll want me to tell you the color of your truck over the phone”). He said bring the pump in and we’ll bench test it. They took one look at it and laughed. (I so like people who know how to laugh) Took me on a mini tour of the place. Set me up with a new pump for $480. Holy Cow!!!!! The new one is so quiet, and lifts with no effort. Guess who I’ll be going back to?

I am just out of touch, the last one I bought was a steal and everything before that was used. Sounds like a great price, do they make them here or is it an import unit?

Friday eveningI had to make sure the new lift pump worked. Maiden load on the box rebuild was a success. So I put 3 yds of topsoil in the box, loaded the Old Mule on a trailer, and headed to Hooterville (the late in-laws place). Robin pulled weeds ALL day, while the DT and I hauled 10 yds of asphalt millings. Returning, 20+ miles from home, the left front tire decided it had worked hard enough and started throwing tread. Drove the back roads the rest of the way home. New tires were already ordered, but won’t be in until later this week.

Kirk,
Excellent!
Glad the truck is working!
That tire is scary though.

Just where is Hooterville? :pimpflash asking for a friend..... :bounce:
