As promised.

Been spending some time over at the in-laws. Cut back the brush along the driveway, pulled up the last of the “dance floor” (the base for a jacuzzi room), started hauling in asphalt millings, and pulled down the smoking (as in cigarettes) shack. The BiL rented a dumpster, and we filled it with things we couldn’t/shouldn’t burn, and then set the rest ablaze. At the end of the day, all that remained of the shack was in the dumpster, except for 2 nice, large, vinyl windows. Unfortunately, we did have to evict several residents, including this fine occupant.

Just saw a newt for the first time in 3 years last week. Love those lil guys.

Looks like the winds are gonna die down for Saturday, so maybe crawler day. I hope the main jet isn't clogged again, a lot of **** is making it's way through the system after sitting 10 years.

The Mule is working hard, you gonna put the dump truck to work on dirt yet this Fall?

It is a lot of work but probably one of the most satisfying things, to look back at the cleaned up area after a lot of hard work.

Yeah, the BiL, my old man, and I were pretty beat on Sunday.

I agree. I think of all of the creepy crawlies out there the next is the coolest.
Throw up a pic of the crawler if you get some time. I think I said the GF (the name of the dumptruck) is getting engine/trans reseal, but I'm hoping to have her back on the road for Saturday morning to haul millings

Nice work!

Hope the mule enjoys the work!

Thanks. She doesn't seem to complain, just keeps pulling.

You're right. It was a lot of hard work, but it was good work and very satisfying.

I did work on the widowmaker. Having it two logging chains away was the best way to deal with it. Last year I had cut about 15' off the base of it and hoped the winter/spring storms would shake it loose where it was hung up. No dice. Still sitting 6' off the ground come October.
Step one: wrap around the base and after a test tug, I throttled up and heard a satisfying crack as a 6" diameter branch snapped and the trunk dropped to the ground. I gave it a couple more tugs to make sure it wasn't going anywhere.
Step two: limbed off another 8' and cut it loose. Used the crawler to drag it out of the way (pic 1)
Step three: chained to the remaining treetop and throttled up. Many wonderful crunchings and crackings later out it came (pic2).
It promptly hooked the first chunk so I dragged them both a little while.

Now, who can identify the poor abused, heavily modified, hoodless little crawler?

I feel guilty reading about all this outdoor work getting done. With all the overtime this month I haven't mowed for 4 weeks. Any other free time is spent readying the S10 for AutoX or, mainly, taking care of our son, as nursing positions haven't been filled on weekend days for 3 months.

Good jobs, guys!

Kev that crawler is so wicked cool. My kind of tool. Used and loved. Glad you played it safe. Anytime you feel like posting more action pics of it, be my guest.

I don't know about guilty, but maybe jealous? Sounds like you have your priorities right. The time for me to start playing with my project is coming soon, so I understand the AutoX priority.

During the tire shedding incident I noticed the oil was literally pouring out of the engine and trans of the Girlfriend. So I've replaced the front and rear main seals, and valve cover gaskets. Sooner than later I’ll be replacing the trans input and output trans seals, hydroboost, and the seal on the bottom of the cylinder. The pieces will get a rattle can makeover as I go. She may be a poor working class girl, but it doesn’t mean she has to be a slob.

If a Chevy V8 isn't marking it's territory, how will it find it's way home?:dunno:

I'm always amazed how you nonchalantly tear into old mules, chevy sparks and dumptrucks. I usually ignore that stuff as long as possible (see exhibit A: crawler sat in pole building 10 years).

You still got that '73 350 out of the pickup as a spare?

When I sold the 95 F250 with the 7.3l the guy tried to talk me down on the already stupidly low price ( I wanted it gone) because of an oil leak. I told him if you had a 25 year old 7.3l that didn't have an oil leak Ford would dispatch a tech to make one. He paid what I was asking.

Thank you Kev. I want to stabilize our home, property and fleet of cars so I can play without worrying, or feeling guilty. And boy do I have the itch to play. And yes, i still have that 350, just in case.

Normally, a little leak doesn't warrant my attention, but these are gushers. Besides, I spent all that time making the back end nice, I might as well continue the trend. No use doing half the job.

I fixed 4 oil leaks (each valve cover counts as one) and we needed to do some work on the Hooterville house, so I put the Girlfriend to work this past weekend. She hauled 18 yds (6 trips) of asphalt millings onto the driveway and then used the Old Mule (Ford 8n) to spread them out. Just cause we’re old and ugly, doesn’t mean we can’t produce.

Now I’m thinking I need a small dump truck.

Doesn't everyone? My back is thanking The Girlfriend. Seriously, With a 1000' of dirt/gravel driveway, it's pretty much an necessity.

There you go putting your stuff to work again! Nice. . . .

Just like me? Old, ugly, and useful?

Good work!

The oil leaks would have soaked right into those tailings without any problems though!

With as much as it's leaking, it would probably soft up the binding agents and clump it. I still have a lot more leaks to fix. And thank you.

Someone mention major leaks?
Less than 200 miles after rebuilding the rear brakes, the oldest fleet car managed to pop a power steering hose. This is it dumping everything left in the rack pulling into the driveway.

Funny you should mention that, Kev, that's the next system leak I'm going fix. THe hydroboost on the GF leaks like a sieve. I'll clean up the pwr stg pump while I'm at it.

Getting caught up after a very long hiatus. It's nice to see so many of us struggle with so many of the same things. I work at Ford and have witnessed good people get walked out the door. Keeping up with life in general is enough to make you just stare at the walls these days. Keep on keeping on - sharing in each other's progress is inspirational.

Thanks for dropping by Milner. Life is never easy, but it should at least be interesting, and these times make it that.

Couple of weekends ago, I was tired of hearing the Girlfriend’s load, obnoxious mouth, and decided to put a muzzle on her. The doughnut was gone on the left side and the heat riser gasket was blown on the right. While I had the pipes down, I figured I might as well put in new manifold gaskets and clean her up a little bit more.

The nice part about living in the country. While I was finishing up the muzzle work on the GF, I heard a combine working across the road. Took a stroll down the driveway. These pics are all taken at the last 100 yds of the driveway. I’m glad these guys let us hang out here.

Fall is hands down my favourite time of the year. It's not stupid hot so you can actually work outside and enjoy it. And the scenery in the country is
