What do you heat your shop with?

It was only 5' (1.5m) up. Still was a little shaky. I have a 2 step system. I have a kerosene torpedo I use to bring the shop up to temp. Goes from 39F (4C) to 70F (21C) in a little over an hour. But I have a really old propane shop furnace that keeps the temps stable. My old man got it for me for the princely sum of $0. Somebody was moving and didn't want it any more.

I like the space you have. A shop takes a long time to get it how you want it. What are you going to finish the walls with.

It's been 11 years to get it this far. Probably another 3 years to finish it. The top edge of the wood is getting a painted chair rail/shelf (working that currently). Above that will be drywall.

We had one in my Dads shop when We were in Chicago, it kept a 40x40 pole barn warm enough to work in, it wasnt insulated either

Wore a hoodie and face mask when I was working with the insulation.

The burn barrels take up way too much floor space. The furnace hangs from the ceiling, is controlled by a thermostat, and was a whole lot cheaper than that $49.95 + shipping. I had everything but one elbow and the vent stack. Even had the 40' of black pipe, though I did have to get threads cut on one end of each pipe.

So the kicker is that the bendix on Old Mule had been acting up, constantly kicking out. On Monday, I wanted to scrape the driveway before the rain came. Hit the starter button, heard a gear crack/break, then just spinning. So I went Tuesday and picked up a new bendix from Steiner Tractor. Installed, and got the same spinning sound. Looked at the front crank pulley and it was spinning like a top. Guessing the timing gear broke on it. So I "had" to use the neighbor's Kubota, again. Still ended up taking 6 hours to plow everything. By the time I get done, I figure I plow well over a 1/2 mile of driveway/road, not including parking spaces. I have parking for roughly a dozen vehicles, and the neighbor has parking for 3, double deep. Anyway, I'll get pics before the weekend's out.

Not fondly I bet. I kind of like it, when my equipment is running good. Not odd that the malfunctioning equipment doesn't bother near as much in the warm weather.

kubota has a cab correct? your just adding to your project plate now you'll have to due a few more fix it things for the neighbor which I'm sure you'll be happy to due. I would gladly pay back work for when your in a bind and the neighbors have the equipment that you need to get your stuff done.

break dows are breakdowns but in the warm weather it just dosn't seem so time critical. or at least thats' how it seems to me.

Yeah, it has a cab, and is a hydrostat drive, with a 5' back blade, and a choice of a 7' (?) front blade or the bucket.. And I really do like doing projects for him. He, and his wife, are those kind of people that you always feel great after doing something for them. I honestly think I could be happy spending the rest of my life doing little projects for them.

That's the kind of Neighbors you pray for, Donnie has told me so many times to just help myself to any of the equipment, I still feel funny just going and getting things but he says dont call just go for it. When he gets in a bind all he has to do is call and I'm there.
He had to go to Georgia Monday so I played truck driver and made his pickups and deliveries of some steel racks they powder coat for a shop in Chattanooga.
It dosnt hurt that we are both gear heads either.
So far my new Neighbors across the road seem to be the same way

Per your request, this is what it looked like after the fun was over. 12” of very fluffy, white stuff. And just in case you doubt the veracity of my statement, if you look very closely you can see how much snow the Squirt Squared plowed 5-6 hours before the end of the storm.

And I will add, I'll take a lifetime of the snow and cold, over hurricanes. Snow storms won't cause me harm or damage, can't say that about hurricanes.

With the situation the way it is now, it's out for a few weeks at best. The shop is still torn up from the insulation (doing the next step before I put everything back). I hope I can get by. We've only had 1 snow that HAD to be plowed, this one. Glad the atv was only a little stuck.

Agreed. Cold weather and snow is a small price to pay for not having to deal with hurricanes, feeling like a sauna for 9 months of the year, nasty creepy crawlies, and snowbirds.

Hurricane parties are awesome. Not having 68 inches of snow is incredible. Being able to wear short sleeves in January is the best.

Those same kind of people who throw hurricane parties down there, throw snow parties here. My wife went into the store to get milk before the last real storm, and said everyone was buying a lot of hooch. Not so much beer and wine, mostly just hard stuff.

I think the grocery stores here (Richmond, VA) pay the the weather guessers on TV to predict snow, then there is a run on the grocery stores. The bread shelves go bare quickly, followed by the milk, then chips, cookies, and anything else that can be opened and eaten right out of the package, the wine shelves get sparse too if the prediction is for anything above about 4 inches of snow.

They did that once here and a reporter went live at the grocery store. She asked this lady if she came to stock up on milk and bread, the lady said to hell with the bread and milk I came for pizza and beer if I'm getting snowed in.

When IBM closed the plants in the Hudson Valley because of snow, Liane and I would throw a big breakfast party for our neighbors. I made an extra leaf for the dining table so we could seat 14. Our house was one of the few with a real fireplace so we would all hang out in PJs and fur lined boots. The one time the power went out we cooked breakfast on a hibachi in front of the fireplace with a nice fire banked behind it. Hurricane parties are for youngsters who don't own the place they're partying in. OK, maybe a Corvette club I belonged to was forced to cancel the event in Tampa and have the party during the storm in an East coast motel. You wouldn't want Licker Dicker punch to go bad or heaven forbid, bring it back home.

Did you do anything interesting yesterday? Not really. Just helped the neighbor get his arthritic horse back on his feet. The top side had 2 pieces of 2” x ¼” angle iron to bridge the load over 2 joists, 2” ratchets straps just behind his shoulders and in front of his hips. Took 2 hours this time, probably 45 minutes next time. Major issues getting the ratchet straps placed.

We rolled him over, and when we did, we were able to move them enough to work the straps under him to a decent position. And you're right, it's going to happen more. But now that we have a system, it won't be that big a deal anymore. I told him if this happens a lot more, we'll get a couple of 120v 1000lbs winches, and this will be super easy on everyone. The poor horse is only like 17 or 18, but has really bad arthritis in his hind quarters. And I really like helping this neighbor out. He's such a nice person.

We have too many horses........ Many of which seem to have issues and some of the older have really appreciated my wife's christmas present which was a PEMF equine system from Respond laser. (Jewelry would have been cheaper!) But we had one of our friends come over last fall and did some treatments of a few horses with different issues and it helped. Your friend doesn't have to buy one - most of the folks who own them (or similar products from other companies) go around and treat horses and charge by the visit. It's worth a shot.
