It looks very much like a late 1800s bench anvil-vise combo made by Canedy & Edwards. US patent 426,362
I think you are right. I found a download a few minutes ago.

US patent 426,362 Combined Anvil and Vise was issued to William E. Canedy of Downers Grove, IL. It was granted on 04/22/1890. Two part Anvil vise. Vise portion looks like Pat. No. {225,563}.
