Are there really people out there willing to pay $30.00 for a used hammer? These things can be found all day long at yard sales. I bought my ball peen hammer for 25 cents. I don't get it...

It is for the name , I collect Pexto hand tools and your right you can get them at yard sales if your a mind to. A lot f Pexto, Peck and Stowe items go for big money the machines do even 30 years old.

A lot of sells seem like they overprice stuff just in case someone that doesn't know what they are buying stumbles across the ad. There are certainly more obscure specialty hammers out there that are worth more. Like look around for a magnesium headed sheet metal hammer. They work great but are rare and cherished they will run way more than 30 bucks

I agree with you on the "Pexto" name, and yes, the machines are valuable because they are so well made and durable. But to me, a hammer is a hammer. However, when you get into different types of tools, there can be a huge difference between let's say....a Whitney Punch, and a Chinese knockoff punch.

Anyone can ask whatever they want for an item, but it doesn't mean they're going to sell it. It's been that way since the beginning of time. Maybe look at that eBay seller's completed auctions to see what he's actually sold things for.

But to me, a hammer is a hammer.

Theoretically correct. In reality though, they're just like any other tool. Some you'll love, some you'll hate and some are just downright junk. A good hammer is a thing to be cherished, because a bad one can irk you every time you try using it.

It's the same as the Snap-on collectors that pay unreal prices for a tool with special color handle. The common tool will turn the fastener just as well as pretty colored one.

I'm not kidding, I didn't even know some hammers are more desirable than others. I just look for old, US made one.

I'm sure I've got a few of these in different weights in my box. Like others have said, I've picked them up at yard sales for $.25 to $.50 a piece.
