I just got this one on trade. I've talked to some of the long time distributors close by & they don't really remember these. I thought I'd post it up. I haven't decided if I'll keep it for the garage (I need it), or clean it up & sell it. Who else has one on here?

Should be 1989. The official start up of Matco as a tool company was 1979. Before that, Matco was strictly tool boxes as part of Mac.

Really liken that box. I've always thought that Matco made the nicest boxes. I'd keep that for personal use Dave!

My father remembers when Mac and Matco split,he just started working at a Chrysler dealership at the time when it happened. It was about March of 1979 when Mac and Matco split.

Matco was very aggressive at getting new boxes out on the street around these parts when they first appeared. Their box prices were reasonable and the trade in allowances were more than generous. I ended up trading in my primary set at work and my beat to hell and back side job set at home. Those new 33" wide boxes were impressive.

I think that what helped them kick start their sales was that their boxes were a recognized and well proven design. They were clones of the then current Mac boxes with the only differences being that the little chrome drawer handles read Matco rather than Mac and the nomenclature stamped on the backside.. And they were less expensive.

I'd love to know roll around box sales figures for the major players in the early 1980's. I'd bet money that Matco grabbed a big chunk of box sales.

Things were simpler then. A hell of a lot less expensive too.

my bussy bought a custom matco color around 1993 ..he was not happy with the awful finish and matco would not do anything about it , except buff it like a used ford

snap on would have replaced the box

Is a box built in 1989 Vintage? It still looks pretty cool. Ive never seen one like it.

That is a definite keeper. The matte paint and chrome trim looks really good, and it looks like it's in great condition.

Since the design is different than current models, I think it qualifies. When you compare it's age to the age of Matco, I think it does.

I did decide to let it go, I just don't have the room in the garage. I've offered it to my nephew since he has just started tinkering with cars, but he hasn't called me back.

Great drawer configuration. For some reason manufacturers dont make as many boxes with very many shallow drawers.

I agree with the previous comment on the number of drawers. I am looking for an older MATCO box just for that reason. I have little use for large deep drawers.

Let me know if you're interested in selling it Dave, I've got a lonely bottom box that isn't cutting it anymore spacewise.
