I just wanted to give everyone using solvent based products the dangers that lurk with them. I am a member of another board as we do acid staining of concrete as well as epoxies and a fellow contractor was working with solvents and something ignited and house he was working on exploded. He is still alive with 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 75% of his body. So just a warning with solvent based materials as this was a professional and can speak myself I have probably been careless at times so will make sure I don't slack off on safety again. As much as people hate water based it serves a purpose as it is a good product especially for residential use and is user friendly not to mention a green building alternative. If using solvents everyone just be careful....

A couple years ago there were news stories about fires and explosions from people refinishing hardwood floors when it was cooler or cold outside. They'd keep the windows closed so that the finish would dry, but the solvents would build up and catch fire. Plus the added issue of rags impregnated with solvents spontaneously combusting.

They have those warnings about "adequate ventilation" for a reason...

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin for June 1 had an account of the May 31st explosion in Upland, CA. Couldn't find a link to the article at this time, it may be posted later. It reported a man was working on a house was injured and the structure heavily damaged in an accidental explosion Saturay afternoon. Upland firefighters responded to a call of an explosion at 4:35 PM. Upon arrival they learned a worker had been applying an acetone sealant to an upstairs floor when vapors set off an explosion in the basement. It caused significant damage to the structure, it blew out most of the windows and doors and one victim was enroute to the burn center. The worker had 2nd degree burns to his legs and is expected to survive. The homeowner was in the house but was not injured.
