Thanks for the input. Going into the stone veneer would require me to hit the studs though, right? I don't think the veneer itself is what would be handling the loads... it would be the studs. And I'm not confident in my ability to find the middle of the studs through the stone veneer without potentially doing a fair bit of damage in the process...
On the bright side, if I do the ceiling mount cleat and at some point decide it looks like garbage, even as bad as I am at drywall work, I could pull the cleat down and get the ceiling back to normal quickly and easily.
