AAA Battery/Flashlight Problem

I have a small Smith and Wesson LED flashlight the uses three AAA batteries in a magazine. Metal case, O-ring sealed, well made little unit.

I have replaced batteries a number of times before and NEVER had an issue. Even with el-cheapo batteries. Have had the flashlight for maybe 8-10 years now.

I bought a 20 count package of Duracel name brand batteries and the flashlight WILL NOT work at all with them. I even tried making some wads of aluminum foil to help make contact. Yes, the batteries measure 1.6V

The best I can figure is positive terminal ****** thingie is slightly larger diameter and not making contact. The difference, if that is the problem, is too small to see by eye. Put the old batteries back in and it works but weak beam of course.

I tried a number of different batteries out of the same package and, NOTHING.

Any ideas?
