Yup, good news.

I was running a Fadal 4020 one day. I was turned 90 deg to the side, using a small DP to deburr holes. I see the Z rapid all the way up...I'm thinking...I don't remember that move in the program! By the time I looked over, the Z was driving straight into the vise in rapid! Turned out to be the Z encoder was loose. Friggin Fadal!

You have my sympathies.
The shop I worked in had ancient mills. Some Bridgeports that could only be used manually and a Trak with an arcane programming language.
You had to sometimes "fool" that machine into doing what you wanted.

My favorite pass-time was dodging the shattered pieces of mills that the boss inadvertently slammed into a workpiece.
