It's in an extremely affluent neighborhood so its possible that it gets restored. David Rockefeller and Martha Stewart own propery in the immediate vicinity.

Go back and look inside. :D

I seem to recall a story several years ago- maybe here on GJ or the HAMB- about somebody that checked out an antique, but fancy estate garage like that, in fact with very similar overgrowth.

Inside the found some fancy old car, a Deusenberg or Bently or some such, that hadn't been touched for decades.

Doc.

If the house is also abandoned, just walk up and peek inside the garage. If a neighbor comes out just say you like the property and are interested in possibly buying it.
If there was anything good, chances are its already been stolen anyways.

Buy it, convert it into a vacation home, rent it on AirBnB. Seriously, we love that area. I plan to spend July-Sept somewhere on the Maine coast after I retire.
Wish I could. It's a magical place but I can't touch the real estate in that area!

I can imagine. We went to an estate/moving sale last weekend, where the house was for sale for 1.5 million dollars. Great view of the Illinois river. Property taxes were $20,000 per year! WHAT?!

I live on the coast in Maine. Midcoast, MDI is downeast and about an hour north. It's not expensive at all if you don't need waterfront.

It's gorgeous, the details of older construction are always what amaze me.

It seems our tools have gotten increasingly more accurate and better in most regards, but the quality of the work has gotten less and less........

Cool looking place.

When you mentioned Martha Stewart's place, I was thinking is was near her house in Bedford, NY (i.e., off of Pea Pond Rd)? I know that area well and don't remember seeing that cool looking garage tucked away in the woods. As an aside, Martha's 150 acre compound in Bedford is just down the street from Ralph Lauren's shack.....his place must be pushing over 250 acres. I can't imagine the taxes on those places when I'm paying around $20k a year on a 3/4 acre lot....NY/Westchester County taxes are nuts.

Here in Ohio when looking for the owners of unlisted homes I go to the tax records website to identify who is paying the taxes. I introduce myself in a letter and inquire about it in a respectful way. I continue to send notes and cards until I get a response. Self addressed stamped envelopes help towards a reply.
Good luck

I am going up there in a couple of weeks to do the horse drawn carriage ride around the park. This is the best time of the year up there IMO. Good weather and the crowds have moved along.

Yes Martha's house is on Skylands drive. The road is unmarked and her house is the only one on the road. The road is her driveway as far as I can tell.

True but the part of seal harbor where Martha lives is called ox hill. What makes it special is that it is high up on a hill with commanding views of the ocean and rocky cliffs. These properties are mostly not waterfront but it seems like nothing can be bought on ox hill for less than 1.5 million. Martha's house is assessed for just shy of 10 million!

Looks like an old carriage house.

That's what I was thinking. 115 years ago, the carriage would sit in that waiting to be hitched up to the horses. And then around 1910, the owner probably bought an Olds or a Model T.

The type of people with estates worth millions of dollars -- the property taxes are like chump change to them. Martha Stewart probably makes $30 million a year in salary and endorsements.
