I think I read a statistic that over 90% of the people who get bitten by a snake are harassing the snake at the time

It’s very rare to get bitten by a poison snake
And even more rare to die from it

It happens
But car accidents are far far more likely to kill you than a snake bite and no one is afraid to get on the highway

Far, far, far more people get on the highway than are in near proximity to a venomous snake (let alone for any amount of time).

Never seen this thread before but absolutely loving the transformation of the hanger to what it’s become!

Subscribed as the closest I would ever get to that much garage space would be a minimum 40x60 shop on an acreage with a house as no way my girl would live in a shop with living accommodations!

Insulation and more insulation.

Foam insulation is insanely expensive so I have alerts set up on Craigslist and I’m constantly browsing Facebook Marketplace for leftover building materials.

6416eaa8ebf52b984987c19979987ad0.jpg

With two more loads this past week my collection totals 3,400+ sq. ft. of 2.5”, 640 sq. ft. of 1.5”, and over 300 sq. ft. of 1” foam insulation. The total cost to acquire, including fuel, is still under $100!

58967317c8d5c5090c5ec50c8666a921.jpg

I’ve added 2.5” of insulation to about 25% of the hangar but hope to have all the walls complete, floor to ceiling, in the coming weeks!

...but wait, there’s more! A local trucking yard was discarding these so I picked up (72) 4’x8’ (2,300+ sq. ft.) dividers used in reefer/refrigerated semi-trailers. They’re made from 2.5” expanded polystyrene (like cheap coolers) laminated between two sheets of heavy plastic with a foam rubber surround to provide the seal. Obviously not as high of an R-rating as the PolyISO I’ve collected but should be better than nothing. The plan is to use the foil laminated denser foam on the sunny sides of the garage and a combination of the dividers and 1.5” foam on the shaded sides. Along with the R3.5 that’s already on the building, the combination of all 4 types of insulation should make it relatively efficient—in theory lol!

Sounds like you could keep it cold as a refrigerator with little more than a window unit haha. Sorry i dont really know much about R ratings.

You must be super quick to jump on the deals, I never even see polyiso post locally. I was thinking I'd bite the bullet and go to repurposedmaterialsinc in a few weeks but that's gonna be like $800 and your $100 sounds a little nicer. Any tips? I'm just SW of you in Newnan so Atlanta is only about a 30-40 min drive. I'm guessing you've got enough now so wouldn't mind letting some of us slower guys get a deal or two!

*There's some janky looking stuff on FB in Austell but yours appears to be very clean

The demand is so high for building materials you have to be quick when it comes to salvaging! I have a toolbox loaded with straps and full gas tank because every second counts—literally have to be ready to go on a moments notice. I even check the local listings whenever I leave a grocery store or out running errands just in case something pops up nearby.

This weekend I picked up an all aluminum picnic table with benches, 4 black Adirondack chairs, a stainless hot/cold water cooler, a 7’ glass display case, and a giant pond liner to build a habitat for the Argentine Tegu. This is the first time having outdoor furniture in years lol!

Latest addition to the hangar. They said it’s heavy and to bring help—how heavy could a 6’ long, barely knee high, cabinet be right?!

346 lbs. heavy [emoji24]

Looking at it, you’d think it’s 150 lbs. tops. Original plan was to get it as something for my plethora of bench grinders/polishers, possibly the bench top drill press, and tool storage. Being so low and not wanting to build a base just yet, or move it much, I decided to use it as a temporary TV console.

speedminded,

Heavy plus over an hour away from your location.

I'd be afraid that I'd go to General Quarters and then, by the time I got there, it would have been gone.

It looks good and the price was right! Glad it worked out for you.

Best regards,

Scott

That was back when furniture was built to last, nowadays you can’t move it to the next room without having all the joints loosen up.

I do have a mouse and it loves to runs down the full length of the seal at the bottom of the 48’ hangar door [emoji23].

Measures 0.15” so it’s probably 5/32” / 8 gauge. The cable/wire rope I’ve found so far in that size I don’t feel is high enough strength.

I did try contacting a hangar door manufacturer but they wanted a serial number off their door before they would sell the cable.

I know I'm late to the party, but my excuse is that I just joined today.

The building and door look to be made by erect-a-tube, out of Harvard, IL. The type of powerhead would confirm it.

Getting the proper cables, and rigging them is important. The "door poppers" are the u shaped rails with the poly cylinders on them that the cables are supposed to go over, forming a triangle when closed. That way with the door unlocked from the sidewall (I don't see locks in your picture), tension on the cables will push the hingeline of the door out, so it will open even if there is wind against the face.

LBC is great! As rough as Murphy Ave. appears, it’s a treasure chest of businesses.

If anyone in Atlanta is in need of cardboard boxes or packaging materials I suggest Cut Rate Box Co. next door to LBC. I’ve had clutches built at Clutch Specialties too.

I used to live in an industrial space on the property with the blue water tower, now called “The Met”. It’s currently undergoing a huge transformation away from what was mostly starving artists when I was there lol!

Another favorite place on Murphy Ave. is a former auto parts store that is home to the architectural firm BLDGS.

Exterior:

...but it’s what’s behind that front door that is incredible.

7c9130f06c9b1034e3e54b680dbf603f.jpg

Dreaming of live/work spaces like this is what keeps me going—it just needs a few cars inside!

This is so cool. I love that part of Atlanta so much. Reminds me of the old New York and surrounding areas that had these kind of industrial spots...

True
But my point is that every single person in the USA personally knows someone that was killed or seriously injured in an automobile accident

Usually they know several people that have been killed or seriously injured in a car accident .
Yet no one is afraid to get in a car and hit the road and take their chances

I don’t bother with curb alerts. In a city of 5M it’s guaranteed there’s several others trying to get it at the same time lol! I contact the seller stating I have a truck available and give them an ETA the moment they give me the address—been scavenging for years and have yet to miss a find.

No plate or plaque that I have found but I doubt there were too many hangar manufacturers in the mid-80’s! The operation does work exactly as you describe.

Picked up a couple loads of cabinet grade plywood to finish the hangar interior! A local shoe store closed and this was the material from their shelves.

(48) 24” x 96” x 3/4”
(20) 30” x 96” x 3/4”

2,300+ lbs. of plywood for $200.

Wasn’t planning on an all wood interior but It should contrast well with the “rustic” concrete floor and [eventually] blacked out ceilings.

On my doors, the data plate is on the gearbox.

The only identification on my hangars is on the ridge cap where it meets the sidewall. For a building as old as your, I doubt it would be there (and the manufacturer of the door may not be the same as the building).

I don't know why there are two cables on the near door popper. I've only seen ones with a single cable to each lift point (typically 4 per door).

I also don't see a cable running to the far lift point. It looks like the cable cut the insulation as it sagged, but I don't see the actual cable in the picture. I can see the one to the inner pulley on the far side of the powerhead.

It looks like you have a single drum powerhead, which should have two cables coming off in one direction from the top and two in the opposite direction from the bottom.

The box hanging off the back of the gearbox contains the limit switches.

1 of the 4 cables was broken when I bought the property so I used a chain hoist in its place to help keep it level while raising with the electric motor. The tension on the cables wasn’t equal either so I had to use giant ratchet straps to keep it level.

After cleaning all the trash and junk out to prepare to work inside over the winter, I attempted to lower the door but it was too bound up. Then I burned up the switch while attempting to free it. I figured out how to jump the switch but I didn’t want to damage the motor so I made the decision to cut the cables—I intended on replacing them anyways.

The smartest thing would have been to replace the one broken cable and calibrate the tension on all of them. Instead, I rushed to get it open, cleaned out, and dry inside. Now I have to replace the switch and all 4 cables!

Did you fry the switch or just blow the fuses in the control box?

There should be spring mechanisms on the cables on the bottom attach points.

I would get cables from Erect-a-Tube, rather than try and do something yourself with parts from the local hardware store. I would get three of the longs and two of the shorts (The actual length depends on the door width and opened height (50'x12'?). That way you will have a spare if needed.

Do you have a scissor lift?

Before I bought one that I could fork through the hangar man doors, when I had a door issue with a hangar I used to secure an 8' stepladder to a baker type scaffold set to its highest point.

Spray some grease into the hinges at the door midline, and the ones at the top.

Lastly, since the door is hanging free at the moment, make sure the rollers on the outside of the column are turning freely (they shouldn't be touching the column with the door down.

You are going to need a set of door camlocks, one left and one right....
Even if it isn't their door, you can use the camlocks and receivers from page 5.
You can also use the astragals on page 8 for sealing the door.
Cables are on page 4. For a single drum powerhead it is probably going to be 5/32" cable, which is consistent with what you measured.

I tried to upload the instructions I had for the single drum powerhead, but the filesize was too large for the site.

If you want it, PM me your e-mail.

Oh wow, thank you. There’s no question it’s their door after looking at the parts catalog.

Definitely need the outside rollers because mine are seized. Even after PB Blaster, oil, and heat only one turns...barely.

One cam lock is good but the other is bent like a Twizzler and broken.

The switch went up in smoke while using it but I can still operate the motor via jumping the controller.

The astragal is surprisingly in good condition but I plan to add a seal between the top and bottom door halves because you can see a sliver of daylight through it.

The cable is indeed 5/32” and all the pulleys seem to be free but I need to figure out why the one cable was broken. Hopefully I can determine that before putting a new cable on!

Your property and thread are epic! Thanks for posting. Really cool how you have worked to clear property and accumulated stuff to drive down costs. Well done.

If you don't have seals on the vertical sides, add them as well. For the bottom seal, I bought some appropriately sized pipe insulation and put it inside the seal to help it keep its shape and provide pressure. We have had 40-50 mph wind driven rain, and nothing comes inside.

On the upper hinge line, I put some trapezoids of foam insulation board I had leftover from insulating the slab behind the seal on the upper tube of the door to provide some extra insulation.

The broken cable and/or the twisted camlock could be due to someone opening the door without releasing the camlocks first.

Really cool place. I always wanted to live like Dan Tanna in Vegas but the wife alas...
Except for the snakes of course. I carry around a suppressed .22 with snake shot because I live on a creek and have kids and dogs. Clearing the brush out and having hawks nearby help too.

Well, today’s find is an interesting one.

A local Asian buffet closed and I got two 8’ tall fountains out of it. Water features aren’t exactly a priority but they were too interesting to pass up!

Now those fountains...that's pretty wild. Wasn't expecting that. Then again, I have a copper pan fountain in my garage, so who am I to talk?
