Quite the score on that plywood!

Who DOESN'T want to live like Dan Tanna???

Now those fountains...that's pretty wild. Wasn't expecting that. Then again, I have a copper pan fountain in my garage, so who am I to talk?
How do I not know about that Vega$ house?! Even though it was before my time, I should have at least seen or heard about it. There's so few photos of it though...which probably explains why I haven't seen it before lol!

In my search to find pics and clips of it I did run into another interesting place I haven't seen:

Thanks! There is so much waste, especially in the construction industry. There’s a reason companies like Habitat For Humanity Restore and LifeCycle are thriving!

Plywood Project #1

After doing the math on how much plywood I need to panel the interior, I elected to put some of the extra to a quick project.

5a963f7248ae18ff3dd6dadfa64526e6.jpg

An 8’ x 8’ x 7” platform bed with 12” overhang on the front and sides is my first project from the recent plywood deal. It’s also the first project in unknown years that I didn’t draw on CAD yet somehow managed not to make a single mistake measuring or cutting lol!

0b991db6504f0bfd088600818dca1417.jpg

Materials:
(6) 30” x 8’ x 3/4” cabinet grade plywood
(3) 2” x 6” x 8’ kiln dried #2 Spruce
(18) 2-1/4” deck screws
(36) 1-1/4” wood screws

42969412a265e24f71ddf68f4a2ca48a.jpg

The LED strip underneath is 10’ too short but was curious how it would look under a “floating” bed. Still have to put 2” trim around it to hide the double thick plywood edge and once I get flooring down I’ll decide how I want to finish it.

Speaking of deals, I got the Thonet modular furniture off Craigslist Free. Retail is $800 for the small ones and $1,100 for the rectangle...each! These will be perfect for the studio area.

I'm a little confused about the bed. Is this place air conditioned currently? I've been to Atlanta and live in NC so I know it gets hot.

The place looks great and I love following along.

It’s perfect at night...for a few more weeks lol! The idea is a flex space. Being a “bedroom” isn’t permanent and can be disassembled and removed in 15 minutes—It’s more of a challenge to see what I can do with a 200 sq. ft. glass box. The walls are insulated and I’m about to put 3.5-5” of insulation on the ceiling. It does need to be comfortable regardless if it’s a bedroom, office, or lounge so I’ll probably just use a 10k+ BTU portable AC for now then eventually get a mini split.

As for the open area, it’s getting 2.5” to 3.5” of polyISO on the walls with an additional 1.5” of foil backed insulation on the west side. I intend to grow a wall of bamboo across the west wall for shade and will probably add a rain screen with airspace for additional thermal protection.

The ceiling will eventually have additional insulation too. I have to add foam closures across the front and back under the corrugated roofing and replace ALL the roofing screws. Then it would probably be wise to spray the entire roof with a modern reflective roofing paint.

The to-do list is long!

Been following along for quite a bit . . . and am always amazed at the deals you've found

Please be careful with a wall of bamboo.
My neighbor spent quite a chunk of change removing his after it started to grow into his pool. :wtf:
My BIL had to spend a small fortune putting in a barrier after the fact for his bamboo

It can definitely be a problem if not contained and done correctly! The rhizomes on running bamboo species can get out out of control at the blink of an eye.

Even though it will be contained I intend on using a species of clumping bamboo that doesn’t have the long running rhizomes. The problem is, most clumping bamboos are tropical and the ones that are cold tolerate don’t do well in heat or direct harsh sun...and that’s the entire purpose of the hedge lol!

I’ve narrowed the search down to a few species that should meet my needs of being a clumping species that reaches 18-25 feet tall and are both heat and cold tolerate.

There’s a guy in my area that dismantles houses and builds a new one in the same foundation using a lot of the old materials

And sells it for a nice profit
He and his crew of three guys do about one a year

Glad I found your thread. Still have to go through 10 pages but I see we think the same. You will probably cry after reading through the first 20 post of my shop build since I had to to go the opposite direction.

Dan Tanna apartment struck a cord with me that still playing to this day.

Roundhouse, forgot to comment on the hanger picture. I saw that show, cool, cool place. I believe it’s in eastern part of central Florida.

Glad you saved the rat snake. Not sure I’d be letting the copperhead roam across the keyboard while I was using. But what do I know, I caught a 3’ rattlesnake and then thought ok, now what. Holding each end, I quickly tossed back into the woods.

Love your place. We have the same taste, I just haven’t put mine in action unfortunately.

Looking good! Quite a bit of waste; esp if they don't let the subs take (or steal) and resell/reuse. Many would prefer just to bill another customer and not carry the excess.

I’m tossing around the idea of building out a studio apartment in half the garage. It’s a 30’x40’ red iron corrugated steel building that’s currently divided down the center with a 2x4” framed wall covered in old corrugated fiberglass roofing panels. It is insulated but I will be adding 5-6” of foam and paneling the interior and ceiling.

1c2cc5daaa61441452c26286088cb0fd.jpg

Regardless if I leave it all garage or not, I plan to cut out the entire lower portion of the center wall and replace it with 7’ tall aluminum framed windows. I’ll have to turn one or two of the panes into doors or may just build a large sliding glass barn door.

e5456e4bc810b36e79382824245b7302.jpg

Including the small loft, the living area would be about 750 sq. ft. on the left side and 600 sq. ft. of garage on the right. Just large enough to store two cars but really only big enough to wrench on one. The main inspiration behind it is Tenn’s house in Bangkok!

Great concept. Did you put plumbing on back wall on purpose? I can see that if future needs or owners want to open space up.
My parents had a single story 12’x20’ efficiency built in a garage that they lived in while building their house. I lived in it for a year. It was a nice, functional space minus the wood paneling. Made it dark and cheap feeling.
With a quick study, here’s what I’d do.
07c578dc69dfbfc36e97885d0c0339b7.jpg
For the two garage doors, I’d used the frosted glass garage doors. Provides light and privacy. When the weather is good, open garage door and your living room expands outside.

Oh wow thank you. I love that you were able to get all the plumbing on a single wall! A) The back wall is the shortest distance from the water source B) I want to disturb the least amount of concrete possible and not obstruct any future use. I’ll have to go back to the “drawing board” and see if I can make some of your layout work. I do intend on having aluminum and glass overhead doors when the budget allows!

The major challenge I put on myself was not making the dividing wall structural. Any amount of weight tied into it will require columns or a 30’ structural beam front to back. Instead, I plan to cut all the current studs and screw a 2x4” to the bottom as a header, leaving me a 7’-1” tall opening that’s nearly 30’ long. My motto is keep it simple, and cheaper! I’ll probably secure an aluminum c-channel on the floor using a Ramset to hold the lower portion of the glass then lock in the top with two pieces of angle. This way no weight is on the glass and I don’t have to worry about thermal expansion breaking it. The dilemma is side-load. If a large person were to lean or push on the center panes of glass how would the framing above react? Obviously I don’t want the upper wall to flex lol! Maybe drill a hole in each stud and put a cable through it front to back with a turnbuckle? Once the framing is covered it wouldn’t be seen and I could leave an access panel at one end for the turnbuckle. I’m not so sure this method would provide enough tension over 30’ but it would definitely be better than nothing.

Not being a structural wall is the logic behind the strange looking loft—it’s essentially a deck on stilts. It doesn’t require any wall support and if I really wanted to I could put giant castors under the corner columns or simply jack it up and put wheel Dolly’s underneath to move it around. I thank Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig for feeding my obsession with kinetic architecture. His designs often implement movement and sliding or opening facades. Who knows, one day the space might be all garage/workshop and I’ll use the loft as a gantry. I like to keep my options open and flexible!

*Edit*
My first layout design didn’t have a loft but I felt the kitchen and storage was too lacking. I was able to throw in an Eames Lounge chair and the bed has the coolest headboard one could ask for lol!

It's been a while since I've been on here... been consumed with work for the last seven or eight months. Admittedly, I completely forgot about your thread and enjoyed catching up for the last hour or so. Nice work, can't wait to see more progress pics.
