Abode DIY Security

All,

I'm looking for a DIY security system and one that looks interesting is from Abode.

It works off a cloud based gateway system and sends alerts to your phone and sets off an alarm in the house. No monitoring contracts, but you can pay for professional monitoring if you chose.

The gateway works with abodeRF long range IP compatible devices, Z-Wave and ZigBee devices as well.

The house and shop I want to install it in are covered with aluminum siding, so that maybe a concern as far as getting a signal from the shop to the gateway in the house.

Anybody using Abode?

cloud based? sets off alarms in the house?

Either of these two "features" would point me elsewhere. Power goes off and you are dead in the water...internet fails, same thing.

I dont like cloud based security anything. Bad idea.

i install CCTV systems for a living and recently had a service call to fix some baricuda networks security cameras.

One camera wasnt sending video to the cloud. unfortunately There was no way to get into the camera to see if it was working locally since all settings are set via a web-portal and cloud server and the server pushes the settings to the camera.

Horrible design...

I prefer local alarm system with GSM dialer. If it primarily connects to central monitoring via internet thats fine IF it has a backup dialer.....

Thanks, appreciate the feedback.

For what it's worth there is a battery backup built into the system and for $8 month cellular backup if the internet goes down. They also off professional monitoring on a temporary basis (vacation etc.) or full time if desired.

Definitely still researching, but I'm not interested in a long term contract or full time professional monitoring (we don't travel that much). More interested in scaring off potential opportunistic burglars and nighttime security.
