Hi, I posted about heirloom tools in a thread and got many useful responses. FWIW, I consider "heirloom" to mean quality tools that hold up well and will be cherished by those who inherit them.

I started thinking along the lines of Carlyle, but have reconsidered. Here are a few first picks:

$138 Williams WSB-23HF | 3/8 Dr Socket/Tool Set, 23 Piece Tool Set Only (USA Made)

$62 Williams MSB-20HRC | 3\8in. Drive Shallow Socket Set 6-Pt, 20-Piece (USA Made)

And I like these screwdrivers (not USA made):
$33 Bahco BE-9886 | 7 Piece Mixed ergo® Screwdriver Set

Total: $233

And the next phase, after I save a bit more:
$139 Williams WS-1171SCA | Chrome Combination Wrench Set Satin 11-Piece (USA Made)

$158 Williams MWS-15A | Chrome Combination Wrench Set 15-Piece (USA Made)

Most of my work is old power equipment like mowers, snowblowers, tillers. Secondary is cars. Opinions?

I would get these for $175
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SK-Tools-SK...:g:G7kAAOSwBLlVTrhe&item=391229438129&vxp=mtr

Then sell that ratchet for $35 and replace it with an FL80, F80, FF80, or what ever you like for $50 or so off of ebay... Also sell that green case and buy a holder you like..

Also if you need up to 24mm, just piece them together off of ebay, you can score single sockets for $2-5 each, I just replaced a 19mm my son seems to have lost for $6 shipped, deep chrome 1/2" drive, also missing a ratchet, so I am sure it will show up next spring when we clean out the garden shed where they keep their mo-karts...

If you are building a williams set, then by all means go with that brand, I have a few of their pieces and they work well, nice stuff, but if another brand gives you more for your money, especially when you are first starting out, then I would look their first...

good luck..

Yeah, I am slightly OCD when it comes to tools. I like to stick to a single brand for a category.

Looks like a smart way to go. Nice range of sizes.

Whats your pliers like?

I dropped money on Knipex Cobra pliers and the pliers wrenches. The pliers wrench is the bees knees.
