They're interesting, nothing against them, but there are getting to be so many of them each weekend.

How about we have just one thread per weekend, and everybody who has found something cool, post in the same thread??

Agreed...or have a dedicated forum.

That's a good idea...the first one that posts can post the thread and others can add to it. :)

I can see the merits of this idea, Bolster.

What happens if lots of people post their finds in that thread, and then lots of other people post questions, comments etc. as well? Do you think it will become a big tangled mess, or am I worrying needlessly?

If people want to go this route, one of us could start an official "GJ Finds" thread each Friday or Saturday or whatever day people want.

You know what I could do? I could post a thread every week that lives as a sticky. That way, everyone would know where the "find/scores" thread was and people wouldn't be starting new ones because they didn't see the existing one.

Each "finds/scores" sticky would last for seven days, Sunday-Saturday, with the date in the title. At the end of that seven days, I'd unstick it and let it fall into forum oblivion, and replace it with a new thread.

Just an idea. Maybe bad, maybe good. I dunno, but I'm sure you all will let me know!

When threads turn sticky I never notice them again.

Things are fine the way they are. These threads tend to show up on weekends when message boards are kind of slow anyway.

You could say the same thing about vises. There have been lost of vise threads.

he's right, i hardly look at stickied threads and if they were all under one thread, there's nothing "interesting" about them. You'll be trying to comment on one persons find and the next will want to comment on someone elses find.

Or you could just not read the threads that don't appeal to you, like people do on pretty much every discussion forum on the internet.

The problem with that is the board gets flooded at times with these threads. I think they should be combined.

An exception would be if you found something that needed identified or needed more information about a particular find then you would start a separate thread.

"Need help identifying Snap on tool I found at flea" or "Found Matco wrench at GS, what years was this style available?" would be examples of threads that were specific enough to keep separate.

If the poster doesn't have very specific questions then those type of threads could be combined and keep the board cleaner.

These "look-what-I-found-at-the-yardsale etc." threads slip away almost as quickly as they appear. They kinda take care of themselves. My vote is to leave things as they are. I enjoy seeing what people have found.

I normally ignore those threads anyway because they just make me jealous.

my vote is to leave them alone, let 'em have their moment.

I'm not asking for any major changes in management. I like seeing what people got, too. Like I said in my OP, nothing against the content.

I'm just wondering if it could become normative to add additional "look what I found" postings to the first one of the weekend. With a general heading of "Weekend Finds" or something.

Not trying to make more work for the mods.

I can understand the suggestion, but my vote would be to leave it as it is. I like looking through lots of kinds of posts, and I stumble onto posts on subjects that I enjoy, even though I would never have gone looking for a post under a subject like that. If there was a separate section for "Look what I found at the swap meet...", I might miss lots of other things, or even get tired of that one section. Not a bad idea really, but I like it like it is. :)

Perhaps you should add one or two more sections to the forum. Under the tool section, you could add a sub category for finds> This could contain threads for all of the finds (ebay, auctions, estate/garage sales, flea markets, etc.) and people trolling for a you **** award for finding such a great deal.
Secondly, I feel you should add a additional category under the Garage sale section titled deals and specials. This area would contain threads about great sales, bargains, coupons, etc.

I Agree with Bolster. Not that these tread are not interesting, I just find that they "dilute" the other content and that more interesting stuff can pass under the radar.

Not that big of a deal but...

I think that it is worth a try. If it crashes and burns, we can just go back to how it is now. I like looking at these threads and this could make it more convienient for everybody.

Considering it is a tools forum, it seems like it should be OK for people to post about tools they bought.

I enjoy seeing them and it would be a shame to send them elsewhere. Lets not make things too complicated.

+1 Dont hate the player, hate the Game. A thread that "dillutes" the forum or isnt "interesting" will quickly sink off the front page. What one person finds interesting my not appeal to another, Why reinvent the wheel?

A sub-forum seems like a pretty good idea.

Those who don't enjoy the "Hey look what I got today" threads can more easily ignore them.

Those who love the "I got a 6" Wilton for $1" threads can more easily find them.

you can add my vote to the subforum list. about 90% of the time i will never make it to the second page of posts, which means i could miss information about something i find more important than who got better deals than me. Don't get me wrong if i have extra time i do like looking to see what the weekend scores were, but they aren't the first things i look for, and would find it easier to ignore a subforum (like i generally do w/ the off topic stuff) than to sift through it.

My feeling is that Ryan is unlikely to add new forums sub-forums to the site. So, we need to work with what we have.

I like it the way it is now, if I feel like reading them, I do. If its not interesting to me, I don't. The titles of the threads should be enough for all of us to distinguish which ones are which.

I enjoy these threads a lot! And I agree with scoutdriver...they disappear pretty damn fast. I vote to do nothing and leave it like it is.

I made this same exact thread a couple weeks ago and it pretty much got shot down, although I completely agree.

As someone who will be posting his recent findings and possibly selling a large number of tools as a result, I prefer to let each thread stand on it's own to gauge interest.

This is part of the problem! You shouldn't troll for buyers on the main board. Selling is what the classified board is for.

Someone could post a "flea market/garage sale find" thread every week and keep everything in one thread.

For better or for worse, it's a democracy. People vote with their views, by their interests. I'll never, ever understand or participate in the H.A.M.Burgering type threads:

Show us your Globemaster tools!

Paper Clips! - Who's got em?

All your screwdrivers - bring 'em out

Craftsman ratchets - Let's see 'em!

but the view count proves the most generic posts are the most popular. I can skim over them with only mild distaste. Those who don't like sale finds should be able to do the same.

It's kind of hard to "skim over" them when the entire first three pages consists of nothing but them, the typical situation on weekends.

Exaggeration at its finest im afraid. A Quick scope of the first 5 pages only reviewed "5" of these troublesome posts that you reference.

why is that? i thought we all would know by now things need to evolve to survive.

Because opinion is divided. There are plenty of people who believe that more forums and sub-forums just makes the site feel clunky and cluttered. It has been mentioned before.

At it's peak, the thread count can get to WELL over half of the posts... the worst I've seen it had nearly all "look what I found" for a few solid pages with discussion threads sprinkled on top.

I already went over this in the other thread. Just because it's not like that RIGHT NOW, does not mean it never happened. :lol_hitti

You implied that since it isn't bad right now, it never is bad... if this wasn't a problem, why would multiple members have created threads addressing it, and recieved positive replies from quite a few other members?

Trying to make it into a non-issue just isn't an effective argument in this case.

On top of that, this was Father's day weekend, which I would guess is one of the least active yard sale weekends in the entire year, besides maybe christmas holiday.
