I am shopping around for a good primer to use on rusty metal. So far rustoleum for rusty metal looks like the way to go. At 30.00 a gallon one will barely enough.I am trying to paint my car trailer,deck and fenders are the worst of it.

Skip the primer and use a DTM (direct to metal) product.

I'd go with the rustoleum.

I tried POR 15 on a couple of projects. Expensive (about 10x the cost of rustoleum) and it won't cover as much area. I did preparations according to their instructions and used their cleaner and prep products. It didn't hold up well at all.

Make sure to hit the loose rust with wire a wheel/brush.

POR15 peeled off in sheets after all their recommended prep. Never again. I would personally order up some southernpolyurethanes.com epoxy primer. Used it on my Jeep and a trailer and was impressed. Not meant for UV exposure so coat over it.

Ive used spray on rustoleum rust reformer over direct rusty metal. Worked very well, and I topcoated it with satin black.

Pressurewash the big stuff off with a 0º tip then spray it with rustoleum, if fenders are REALLY bad you can just replace them.

Real primer is the only way.

The only good thing about rattle can paint.... is that it's easy to take off .


Go to your local paint store, have then hook you up, it will cost maybe $75 to started, then buy a $15 harbor freight gun.
