? about vise mounting

Why on some vise mounting pads,are 2 holes wider apart than the other 2 holes? Which is the best mounting position & why?

The holes that are farther apart are so that you can put the vise as close to the edge of the bench as possible and still have your mounting bolts well into the bench.
