Just wondering what some of you guys have bought for work that is a little more than what is expected of you to buy. For me, I have bought big axle wheel sockets that make my job easier that the shop doesn't want to buy, and have been thinking about a nice 20 ton bottle jack and 3 ton chain fall...but that is getting up in price. What are some items, either shop equipment or expensive items, that you guys have bought that most other mechanics wouldn't spend the money on.

Oscilloscope about 15 years ago. A nice Textronics storage scope. Around $3k. Switched jobs and haven't used it in 13 years.

Let's see, I have my own battery tester, bushing drivers, pullers, 3/4" impact, sockets torque wrench, torque multipler, cordless grease gun, shop carts, a/c equipment, tap and dies, all the tools for changing tires and some manufacturer special that my shop does not. The other locations have all of these provided. Unless it is auto ship from bobcat, they won't buy it, I can borrow it from the Green Bay shop.

I have a feeling having to provide above and beyond high dollar tools and gadgets for just about any skilled trade job is going to become the norm.

Ball joint press master set. Pullers all sorts lots of $$$ worth. Axle nut sockets big and small and spanners. Bearing seperators. Scan tools solus pro and launch x-431. 3/4 and 1in impacts. 3/4 and 1 in sockets from 3/4-2 1/2in. Camshaft and crankshaft tools for belt replacement. Battery tester. Im sure theres tons of "shop tools" that i own. Most of them i bought because the last shop i worked at had absolutly no shop tools. My current shop does but its though when two people want the same tool or the shop tools are beat up or broken. So i have my own that are well taken care of. Work properly and are at the ready when i need it. Also i do tons of side work so i take em home when needed.

A lot our shop is pretty stingy. I've got my own programming cables , pullers, bottle jack, specialty sockets, bearing and race drivers, 3/4 stuff basically if I need it I buy it.

Lately I have been adding paint / body tools to my collection. The shop has all that stuff available for the rare occasion we need it. I just got tired of finding the guns left dirty from the last guy and a DA that paper won't stick to anymore because some lug-nut set it pad down on an oily workbench.

A/C vacuum pump. Engine support bar. I didn't buy it for this reason, but I had to bring my mig welder into work when I worked at a Ford dealer a few years ago to do the sliding door recalls on the Windstar vans. On the up side.I was the only guy who did them and I got pretty fast and made decent money on them.

A handheld Ridgid SeeSnake and an enormous wheeled Associated battery charger.

I rarely use them but they were so insanely cheap I could not turn them down.

The camera snake has been invaluable a few times locating wiring in walls or small items dropped down drains.
