It seems the new cans of r-134 have something called an ACME top that does not use the older puncture type fitting. There are many adaptors available but they vary in price quite a bit. Does anyone have experience with these? I don't really want to replace my entire gauge manifold. Just looking for a decent priced adaptor fitting.

Not an auto A/C guy, but - judging from what's transpired in the residential HVAC industry - I'm not surprised.
Next time I see my auto mechanic I'll ask them about any weird adaptors they use for servicing and where they get 'em.

The ACME thread is not new. It's been used on R134a cans since day one. Its to prevent accidental mixing of refrigerants. R134a gauge sets screw right onto any r134a can. If you insist on using your old r12 charging equipment, adapters are available.

I have a yellow jacket R134a gauge set and it doesn't screw onto the r134a self sealing cans I just bought at Walmart. Hence the need for an adapter. I bought a simple one off Amazon but they are widely available and cheap.
Okay, so I misspoke..... you're correct, the hose from your gauge set does NOT screw onto the can itself. You need a "can tap" (see attachment) which then screws onto your yellow charge hose. I usually charge from a 30 pound tank.... it's been years since I've charged from a small can. The yellow charge hose screws right onto a 30 pound tank. Please forgive me.

Yup thats the ticket for the new non puncture type cans. It looks cheap but actually works really well. Ive done quite a few cars with that 4 dollar adapter.
