I'm interested in being able to work with both gasses for my 134a VW as well as an R12 '83 BMW (I know a R12 source).

I found these two setups from Yellow Jacket and Robinair. Given this price range (~$100) are these best choices? What is there to distinguish them (other than need to buy quick connects for the Yellow Jacket? Are there other features I should be thinking about?

Thanks in advance for schooling me...

I'd get a separate set for each gas, the PAG oil used in R134a systems can be sensitive to contamination (e.g. mineral oil from R12 systems).

I'd say the Yellow Jacket are slightly better quality, plus I think the spares availability would be better for the Yellow Jacket.

I have YJ's Titan model and it works great, plus made in USA. Robinair mostly made in China.

Get the shut off hose at least for the yellow high side line. You really spray a lot of refigerant out with just removing the hose without one. You can get a short 6-8 inch hose with shut off. Keeps you from freezing your fingers as bad also.
