I just had a new A/C system installed with heat pump. The installer told me I needed #6 & #8 wire. I want to pull the wires myself to save a little $$$ but I'm not sure which wire is for the A/C and which is for the heat.

Any electricians out there can give me some guidance, I would appreciate it.

The equipment labels state what the electrical requirements are. Size your circuits based on that info.

I am not against diy. If you want to save a little, better make sure you know what you are doing.
Condensing unit will require a lower amperage so check the specs. (compressor and fan motor amps)
Indoor unit for heat pumps require an electric back up heating strips so the circuit sizing will depend on the wattage of the electric strips + blower motor.
Good luck.
