my heat pump is way oversize, it was free, its been a good unit. 5 ton, but i only need a 3 1/2 ton. But i think i need a new heat pump outside unit. can i keep the inside five ton coil or it that going need to be change too if i go 3 1/2 outside
You will most likely need to change the indoor too. You might be able to run the blower fan on low speed and match the CFM needed for 3-1/2 ton, but I would suspect you need to change the air handler.
Depends, my Goodman air handler will support different sizes of condensers. It has dip switches to set different air speeds based upon the size of the outdoor unit. Yours may be the same or it may be a fixed speed. You'll have to find out.
Generally speaking, the evaporator can be larger than the condenser. It is done often for more humidity removal. This is also how higher SEER ratings are obtained (bigger blower, bigger evap).
However, the blower, filters and ductwork needs to be able to support the higher airflow. The manufacturers have tables that show cooling capacities with the equipment.
Going the other way- larger condenser than evaporator- is a no no.
Being 1.5 ton different in size air handler should be changed. Is the refrigerant the same ? The lines should be replaced their probably the wrong size. Over size lines might cause lost of proper oil return by lowering refrigerant velocity.
IMO go for it, when I ran roads in my younger days being HVAC tech we always installed evap coil 1 ton larger than condenser just for efficiency sake and as others said little humidity control. Ask yourself what got to lose? Really nothing, if anything, if your coil has TXV it can be change out to match condenser. Yea, it’s not perfect and company won’t suggest it. And they may tell you that voids warranty, but maybe they won’t. Good luck
