How many guys only have a window unit. I have a small house and i am only home to sleep. It had a central air but no one lived there for some time and it went bad.Today it got in the 90s so i got it ready to put in for tonight.

I just have a portable ac unit in my bedroom and it does the trick so i can sleep but can't cool anything bigger than the room so i sweat sitting in the rest of the house.
My goal in the next couple years in to get ac installed in my house but don't have the money right now.

There are some very economical mini splits on eBay with high SEER ratings, they're a lot more $$ but I'd probably go that route.

Nothing beats central air though :)

I've used window units for cooling one room, and they work well for that. I have central air, but the upstairs bedroom needs a window unit to help get the temperature down at bedtime.

Air conditioning is more than just temperature control. Humidity control is the other half of the equation. Once the whole house is dried out inside, higher temperatures will feel more comfortable. Here's a chart that shows this:

Consider getting an HVAC technician to diagnose what's wrong with the central air unit. It may have just lost its charge for some reason, and that's not necessarily difficult or costly to repair. Once you get it running, life will be more pleasant.

Here's the graph in the real standard, ASHRAE 55:

Same here. We use a $100 a/c window unit in our bonus room some evenings. Works fine.

we used 2 window units in our bungalow to cool the house. one just wasn't quite enough to cool 2 bedrooms, living room and kitchen. I put one on each side of the house and ran them on low, worked well without killing the electric bill.

The compresser is locked up. When i moved in i had a buddy look at it. It didnt have any gas in it ether and i also removed every thing after finding out it needed alot of work because i was doing several things to my house. The bigest thing i dont like about the window unit is the noise. Its in the liveing room witch is the center of the house and i have to have the tv turned up loud. My house is small 25x3?. I dont know if a newer ac would be quieter or not.Yes central air would be alot nicer.

I work from home meaning I spend close to 8 hours a day in a single room. Considering this room gets much hotter than the rest of the house due to placement of its windows, it makes no sense to cool the rest of the house just so I can have an air conditioned office. I have the wrong kind of windows for an air conditioner, though, so I stuck mine through the wall. It works well, though I did have to go with an oversized unit (8,000 btu to cool 150 sqft) due to receiving direct afternoon sun on 105-110 degree summer days.

We have central air but have not had to run it yet this year. We use a swamp cooler (much less $$$ to run) to keep the rest of the house comfortable.

I have a 1800 square foot "L" shaped Raised Ranch style Home with a Boiler System.
So...No Duct work.
I use 2 Window units, One at each end of the House and it cools the house down really well.
The New Fridgidare units are alot less noisy than even units that are 2 years old.

Today, modern heat pumps along with air handlers are being used for this. All that has to be run is tubing and wiring, and that can be run under the floor or through a loft. I have a unit that heats and cools my family room addition that has no ducting.

I have a 1.5 Ton Keeprite central air unit, for the 2 story house.
- installed in 1991 and still going strong...never a leak or failure

And a near new 12,300 BTU Danby sleeve unit (bought used for $200) in the 2x6" wall of my 24x30 ft. detached garage.

I cut down some huge trees a year ago that were keeping my 1400 sq ft open floor plan house cool in summer. My house now is 15 degrees warmer inside than when it was well shaded.

I put a 13K BTU Frigidaire unit upstairs and a 7k in the downstairs. On auto it keeps the house very comfortable. No biggie on the electric bill as these units are pretty efficient and electricity is cheap here.

Noisier than I'd like but until I can afford something more sophisticated it works excellently....and I sleep like a rock so no problem there!

I've got an older central ac. Last year I installed a window unit in bedroom and lowered the power bill in more than half. I've got to be cool to sleep but rest of time I can stand it warmer. Money spent in electricity is money I can't buy tools with.

Once the house is dried out, higher temperatures are comfortable. I set the 'stat at about 78-80. And the windows stay closed so moisture doesn't get back inside.
