I did try a search for AC but didn't really find what I was looking for. I was considering using a split system AC unit for my garage which is about 500sqft.

Has anyone used these systems in a garage and if so, how did you like the results?

Are you referring to a ductless mini split? If you are, they are quite effective at cooling spaces that are open (no walls or dividers) and have a decent amount of insulation. You could get by with a 1 to 1 1/2 ton capacity system (12,000 to 18,000 BTU's) if the garage has insulation in the walls and cieling. If the garage door were insulated as well it would be even more efficient.
