I finally bit the bullet and decided to get a tire changer / balancer combo from Greg Smith Equipment for my home garage:

Now I need to sort out what tools & accessories I need in addition to the machinery. Obviously I need weights, I have 0.25 and 0.5 oz stick-on's from a less than successful attempt at using a HF bubble balancer. I plan on getting some P-type clip-on's for steel rims. Would you bother with any of the different types of clip-on's for alloy rims? Are there any other tire changing specific tools which you think I should get to start out with? Thanks!

I have the HF manual tire changer, the HF bubble balancer, some stick on weights (have yet to open the packages), and I save the assorted clip on weights from previous tire changes, an old pair of Channellocks and an old Ball Peen hammer. Compressor / Air Hose / Chuck & Guage I had already.

EDIT: Of course ! Rim Slip and a brush ! Duh !

Did 12 winter tire installations (3 cars) for family & friends who were down on thier luck last fall. The bubble balancer worked quite well. No vibrations at all up to 70mph.

A couple of the tires had pretty stiff sidewalls...nothing a bit of choke cleaner and my propane torch couldn't handle. Scared the **** out of one my friends that was giving me a hand though.

:)

Don't ask.
Lube and a decent brush and bottle. You can make rim protectors from plastic bottles.
Valve stem tool and a selection of valve stems. A couple tools to hold the first side of the tire as you pull the rest around. A few tire bars, tire irons and spoons.
Air cannon (bead blaster). A clip on open air chuck with a ball valve. Tire gauge. Wheel weight pliers. Cleaner and rags to prep the surface for stick n weights. Oh yeah, a compressor and assortment of pressure gauges.

Thanks guys, sounds like I have the basics already, except lube. Is the real stuff noticeably better than dish soap?

If you are mounting low profile tires, bead holders are invaluable. I got a couple of these, but there are a number of different designs.
