Accounting for beams in lighting plan

I'm working on a lighting plan for my 3 car garage, having read through the stickies and played around with the visual interior tool, which is quite illuminating (sorry). With 9.5' ceilings I'm looking at surface mount fixtures. But my garage has a couple of beams; one that is 7" wide and "hangs down" 19" running across the width of the garage about 4.5 feet from the back wall, and a second beam that is also 7" wide and hangs 14" from the ceiling that runs from the front wall back to the first beam, between the left hand and center bays. Seems to me that these beams are going to significantly impact the light spread from nearby surface mount fixtures, but I'm not sure how to take them into account in my plan. Does anyone have any suggestions?
