That's an actual Xacto blade set rebranded, and not a cheap knockoff. Solid plastic handle, not hollow, and the aluminum handles are also solid. It's a very good price and worth having.

Comparing Amazon's picture of the equivalent Xacto set, I don't think this is an Xacto set. See the knurling on the knife handles for instance.

Xacto set at Amazon:

Amazon has a very similar knockoff set for $4.95:

The ACE product has a wood style box like the Xacto, whereas the Amazon knock off has a plastic box. The ACE might be a knock off also, but it seems to look like a better quality knock off.

I picked one of these up this morning. The box is identical to a genuine Xacto set I got as a kid 25 years ago. The quality of the knives seems as good as Xacto with the exception of the large plastic-handled one which is pretty lightweight. Definitely worth $5 though!

While I was there I also picked up 4 sets of the Irwin Quick Grip clamps that are listed for $5 in the same Ace flyer. My local store didn't have any on the shelf. When I asked the manager about it he muttered something about not having time to set them out yet and went into the back room to get them for me. That seemed odd since the promotion ends today :wtf:. Definitely a good buy at $5/pr since Ace normally sells them for $10/ea. Thanks OP!

I'm torn.

On the one hand, I keep thinking "Only five bucks!"

On the other hand I keep wondering "What the hell would I do with xacto knives?"

My Dad found three in his store going for $19, I believe, but he got them reduced to the online price.

Same for me, went in today to my local store and none of the regulars that I chat with were working. So I ask the chick at the register if they would match the online price to which she promptly answered a big fat NO. Now at the time I only had one set. So I headed home, jumped online and promtly ordered two just for good measure :p. I'll pick'm up tomorrow, I really hope she's working.

Would have been funny if you got on a smartphone and ordered them while standing there, then asked her to check for your order.

Finally got a call from ACE Hardware to come down and pickup the hobby knife set. Not bad for a Made in China set. The box is even better made than the real Xacto set I have.

is it safe to assume these are made in China?

Mine said made in the USA.

Edit: Mine was made in USA; my brother's, which I bought at the same time, was made in China. Guess I got some new old stock. Same bar code and guarantee.

The back of the USA packaging (top) has the blade silhouettes in black.

Not a huge difference in quality. If anything, the polish on the handles and the box are nicer on the Chinese version. The plastic handles are different but neither seems better.

I like the set (both COOs) and I think it was easily worth the money.

Chinese on top, USA on bottom.

Sorry KD, I missed your question, they were the little 4.5 inch Irwin clamps that were on the same page of the flyer as the hobby knife set. It looks like Ace took the flyer down from their website so the deal must be over :(.
