Yeah its.... -V- 43784 is how it reads. I tried to look it up on sears web page but no rebuild kits came up for craftsman.

Yea that's an obsolete ratchet. A Local Sears might have a rebuild kit for it. E-bay is another option.

You could try checking out a full line Sears, especially if it is a store that has been there for a couple decades. Ask to speak to the PMT. Some of these guys will hoard broken ratchet parts/ rebuild kits. It's a **** shoot but I have had success in the past rummaging around in their stash to find what I want

Who the hell would bother engraving a c-man ratchet? That seems like way too much work for a tool that no one is likely to bother stealing and for which the value is quite low. Most any of them can be had off ebay for under $20. Besides - since sears feels the need to make everything in China now I would rather not have anything with their name on it - past or present.

GD

Value of the tool has nothing to do whether or not it warrants owner engravings. Engraving can have multiple uses to the owner of the tool. It can be for accountability to avoid mix-up of tools on the job with other workers, identification for return if found lost and a few other reasons.

As to stealing, vast majority of thieves in a shop environment are thieves of opportunity and will just as easily steal a cheap Craftsman ratchet none the less as if you just left loose change out in the open on your tool box.

Are the rebuild kits 'good enough' or are they any good? Are they USA parts, and does that matter to you? Personally, with nearly every ratchet in every price range having the 5* ratcheting now, if I had an old 24T or something with tons of swing I would just look at it as an opportunity to warrant buying an upgrade. Still get my ratchet rebuilt but not cry over it. I wonder if you could get a kit to upgrade your ratchet to a higher tooth count?

Personally, I really like my Kobalt GW copy from a few years ago. Great ratchets. But now with the 5* ones I got from HF I am even using the 72T less and less. I think mine are 96T? If I had an old 24T or 36T I would not use it as my main ratchet anyway.

not sure where your disdain for a "teenager" comes from
Maybe from them always on his lawn. And their damn music past 6 PM

greasing it like a schoolgirl
I think you're doing something wrong with your schoolgirls. Mine come pretty well greased.

Isn't that the kit Sears re-released a year or so ago?

In the recent past I've had at least one or two ratchets of that vintage rebuilt using the newly released kits and my local Sears gave me a rebuild kit. These were all the new kits.

Perhaps? I do need to update my list of what's available through normal channels.

I am kinda weary at times telling folks to go to Sears and check. Seems to simply invite more of the GJ shitfest.

Ordered rebuild kit on ebay $7.95 comes with 2 kits, whiich is good cause I have three of these old ratchets.

Went back to Ace today, he/manager did offer to get a rebuild kit for it. Sears did not have one for that model # of ratchet, to old. Very apologetic, still could not trade for replacement cause model # was not the same. If it had been newer with the same model number he carried, he would gladly exchange no problem. I got the impression it was more a sears exact tool for exact tool issue and problem getting reimbursed from sears with model # not matching new stock. Local Ace is a mom & pop small store with a limited craftsman tool section, I try to shop there vs china town Menards if possible. They tried on the rebuild kit thats all I can ask. They know I shop there and appreciate my business and were sorry they couldn't help this time. :dunno:

I actually like Menards because they focus on USA made products. They don't have them for everything, but they have more USA made products than the other big box stores, from what I've seen. Menards also often marks the signs for items that are made in the USA, so you can tell without looking at all the boxes.

Also, Menards has USA made tools under their Masterforce brand. It's all Apex Tools and Pratt-Read stuff, from what I've seen.

I actually like it too. I was just being smartazz. Every now and then they put out a made in the USA sale flyer, which is good. I still try and shop at local owned hardware first if possible. You know.... locally owned Good vs corporate EVIL. LOL

Reason for not driving to closest sears store...... 34 miles away,

My truck gets 17mpg.....4 gal gas X 3.10 = $12.40

I'm getting two rebuild kits for $7.95 free shipping.

I hope I can rebuild it. Someone said a two yr old can do it, but the wife thinks I'm rather childish at times. I might have some difficulty. :willy_nil

One of the reasons a lot of us buy Craftsman tools is the "No Hassle Warranty". I only expect to take tools back to a Sears store. The quality of the tools is important to me but so is selection (both of my local Sears stores have HUGE tool departments.) And service when I need to use the "No Hassle Warranty". We all owe a huge debt to Richard Sears for writing the book on customer service. He created an atmosphere that made other tool dealers take care of existing customers in order to compete. I used to have my own business and I understand the frustration on both sides.
