This recent Black Friday, my local Ace Hardware had a 6 piece Gearwrench Set for $9.99 (Either SAE or Metric).

I sent my wife to pick up one of each for Christmas, as I am building a small tool kit for my grandson who recently obtained his driver's license.

These tools are double branded Ace & Gearwrench. Are these a lesser quality than the standard gearwrench tools? I just looked at them and they seem to be pretty good. I'm kicking myself for not getting a second set for my tool box.

I personally will not buy any gearwrenches going forward. I have an old SAE and metric set, the ones made in Taiwan, and they are great. The ones being made in the last few years are not of the same quality as the old versions. I purchased a set and the open ends are just huge and thick, making them virtually useless. And yes, I do use the open ends a lot. The ratcheting mechanism also seems to be cheapened. There are other options out there, though for more $$
