While I've been reading up on the intriguing idea of mixing acetone with ATF to make your own highly effective rust penetrant/solvent for freeing up stuck bolts and more, what I haven't seen is what to put the solvent *IN*.

Acetone is a great solvent for cleaning a lot of materials including some things like spray adhesives which are rather stubborn. It's strong enough that it can soften or destroy plastics. That becomes the issue.

Even at the recommended 50/50 mix, it may still be too strong and affect the container- or would it?

What container can you put it in to use as an applicator? I suspect if you use a common spray bottle that the solvent will attack either the container or the pump mechanism. Maybe some are more resistant than others. I'd prefer to have it in a hand spray bottle if possible. If it's in a bottle that I have to brush into place, then that would be more awkward and less likely to be used.

I've got the materials ready. Just not sure what to put the mixture into.

I used a plastic brake fluid container, it wasn't affected by the acetone at all.
Considering how quickly the mixture separates out again I didn't even attempt to spray it, just shook it like hell and poured it on.

I use an empty contact lense solution bottle. The spout works pretty good for dribbling the mix onto stubborn fasteners.

I recently soaked some rear end parts in 50/50 mix in plastic zip top bags. They held up fine for 48 hours......

You must have bought the acetone in a can. Don't throw away empty solvent cans and you'll always have something for storage. For active use, the oil can sounds good. The old fashioned non pump oil can sounds best.
