This is the result of a leaking Acetylene bottle stored in a plumbers van 10-22-09.

It was accidently ignited by activating a remote door lock device. Can you imagine the surprise this must have been when they pushed the remote button. It was a miracle that no one was hurt.

This was posted in the free parking about a month ago or so, It good to have a reminder of how careful we really need to be when we transport our tanks. They can be very dangerous!

Appears to be overseas somewhere, Australia or New Zealand. The license plates are not shaped like ours here, and one photo shows the passenger door on the roof of the house on the left side of van.

I suspect that this was due to the tank not being shut off and the hoses or regulators were leaking. I have a hard time believing that the tank was leaking.

I've seen that a lot of people are negligent in shutting torches off properly and bleeding the remaining gasses from the hoses and regulators.

However, it's never smart to carry oxy actelyene in such small spaces....... most of the suppliers will not load a tank into your enclosed vehicle.

I just went out to the shop and dragged my torches outside .
Thanx Trevor

This is a little extreme all you need to do is make sure your tanks stay certified and remember to turn your valves off when you done. Hell My tanks are to the right of my avater witch is directly in front of my gas furnace witch gets me to thinking that's not too bright. At a bare minimum This thread will make me move my tanks to the other wall of my garage.

RESIDENTS of a southern Melbourne suburb were rudely awoken by an exploding plumber's van early today.

The explosion occurred when two apprentice plumbers turned up and activated a remote control lock on the van in Dunscombe Place, Chelsea Heights.

The indicators flashed and the car exploded.

Country Fire Authority fire officer Greg Christison said it received calls from residents about a large explosion just after 6am.

When they arrived on the scene they found a plumber's van in flames in the driveway of a home in the suburban street.

Several homes surrounding the explosion were extensively damaged and some residents were evacuated from their homes as the CFA brought the blaze under control.

Mr Christison said nearby houses suffered structural damage, windows were blown out and doors and roof tiles damaged. Debris were found 50 metres from the explosion.

Mr Christison said it was amazing no one was injured.

"People we have spoken to have reported they were awakened to a loud explosion. It would have been a fairly loud bang given the amount of debris strewn about the place," he said.

"As I have said we're very fortunate no one was actually injured as a result of this."

He said the CFA and police were investigating the cause of the explosion.

Police did not believe the explosion was suspicious, Kingston Police Inspector Neil Paterson said.

"It is very unusual for these sorts of things to occur," he said.

It is believed one or two canisters containing oxy acetylene gas, which is used for welding, and that were located in the back of the van, may have leaked and caused the explosion.

"If our arson and explosives investigators can determine that as the cause of the explosion, then Worksafe will also look at the causes," he said. "There are regulations around the safe storage of oxy acetylene."

Dunscombe Place remains blocked off with no one allowed to come or go as police continue their investigation. At least seven houses have suffered extensive structural damage with debris from the van landing on roofs and windows broken.

The only part of the van left was the chassis, Insp Paterson said

A six shooter will never jam and if you can't stop him in six, its time to hunt a hidy hole. LOL

One must admit, there's a bit of Benny Hill or Laugh-in here.....picture the mild mannered guy who pushes the button to open his garage.... and the neighborhood explodes. (Cue the funny music, the neighbor blonde wide-eyed looking at the blast, and the firemen riding around on tri-cycles all speeded up).

Perhaps I digress...
