acetylene gauges

I bought a used set of smith heavy duty torches
came with the everything but the tanks
but the acetylene gauge has female fitting instead of male
what do i need to do? adapter? new gauge?
could it have been used with propane?

You can by an adapter, or change the fitting. All gas (welding) companies sell them.

I would not cobble ANYTHING together when dealing with acetylene, it could kill you, period.

I always raise a big stink every time I'm in a shop that has some old non functioning gauge on their tank, it is just plain dangerous.

I had the same issue. Welding store sold me a replacement fitting.
