acetylene-oxygen torch set up

Hi all

I'm just confirming torch settings for A/O torch. My understanding is that acetylene should be run at 5-7 and the oxygen 7-10. Is this about right? I've also got a cutting tip which I've run around 10-15. (these values I've used but it was a few years ago).

My other question is, for a rosebud tip is 12-15 acetylene and 30ish for oxygen?

Finally, all of this is because I'm trying to heat some metal in order to twist it into ornamental shapes. The stock is 3/16" rod, 18" long and 18 in number. I have welded each end so the length of stock looks like a gun muzzle sort of. I want to heat the whole group, then twist them somewhat similar to what you'd see on a wrought iron fence. I've used the cutting torch at the settings above but have a hard time getting the metal to a even moderately bright red and am thinking possibly the rosebud might be a better way to heat.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Use those charts for the pressures then when setting the acetylene find the point where it smokes least and there is no "gap" between the flame and tip. Then add oxygen until the blue in the core is one colour. You will see as you add the second "cone" will get smaller. Make it just disappear for cutting and you may want a slight bit left for heating. Clear as mud I hope. Hopefully you can find pics online or someone has a better way of explaning it.

Maybe look up carborizing flame and oxidizing flame with acetylene.

The rosebud will use an equal amount of oxygen as acetylene, for a neutral flame.
Cutting requires more air to blow through the molten metal, once the initial flame is set neutral, hence the higher pressure.
Hope that makes sense.
