Acetylene Price?

I have read in a couple different places recently of the high cost of acetylene. It has been quite some time since I have had to refill my bottles. I don't recall the price being too far out of line at the time. I have been rather put out for some time though over the "HazMat" charge they add to the tab every time I have bottles filled.

So has there been a big rate increase on acetylene fills in the last year or so?

Just refilled my small bottle for $34 at Welsco in Little Rock. That is higher than in the past but I don't use a lot of Acetylene. I use my Plasma torch for most of my cutting and only use the Oxy- Acet for brazing and heating metal to shape it.

Not sure what size you filled, but it don't sound like a huge increase. Even though I may start using LPG for more cutting and heating. Save the Acy for brazing.

I filled my Size 2 acetylene cylinder last week for $40. I seem to recall it was about $35 or so six months ago.

Cant comment on acetylene price but i can about the haz mat charge. I stopped at the local welding supply a year back for some flux core wire. I asked about the price and he said $20 which is what i expected. He rang it up and said thatll be $31. I said ummm what? " Sorry, $11 hazmat handling fee" I left and havent been back. I lucked out that day and TSC had it on sale for $10

Nothing useful for this thread, but I'm in sherwood. Nice to see someone local.

I just filled my large oxy and act bottles. They are number 4's and 5's I think. The Oxy is about 5' tall and the act is about 50", both about 10-11" in diameter.

They were exchanged at TSC. My bill was $145 If I remember right it broke down to $80 for Act, $40 for Oxy, and $25 because I owned my Act tank, they charge you for the first exchange.

Yet another of those threads that makes me shake my head in disbelief..

4.3 cubic metres of Acetylene will cost me $256 and the bottle is $15 a month to rent.

Ouch! Would not take long to own your bottles if that option is available. Even if you had to go with smaller bottles.

So far it looks like everyone has had a bit of an increase, but nothing other than Australia is too far out of line.

Does look like TSC is getting a premium for their handling though. I'd look for a welding supplier.

They will exchange the smaller tanks here, they used to swap all sizes. They didn't want to swap my big Act tank, even said in the book "no exchanges on #5 tanks" however I kinda got on the kids good side by moving my tanks to the cage, moving the new tanks to my truck, helping him move the few odd things that were kinda in the way of the cage. When we went back inside to settle up the bill he saw the "no exchange" thing. I'm pretty sure he thought I was going to make him move them the second time, he him-hawed around not doing the swap fot a bit, I asked him if he was going to make me drive all the way down to Hall's (the other welding supply company) and have me get both of them filled there. He said he would swap them. I guess that it didn't hurt that I am in there just about every week for something. Your milage may vary. Keith

I know that if you rent your tanks, the price to buy them went up, then after that, they quit selling tanks to individuals. That was through DeLille. I think my tank for the welder is $8/month.

I do have two small tanks I want to get filled if my large tanks ever run out. I go for months without ever using them.

Well that just *****!!! How in the hell do they expect you to get their tanks if they wont exchange them??? So I guess I'm screwed if I get them filled/exchanged at a different welding supply. This is not good. Keith

Owning cylinders isn't an option Im afraid. Only three suppliers here and all have you on the drip for rental.
