Hey guys, I wasn't sure the proper place to post this question, but this forum seemed like the best place, since we discuss etching and painting.

I've got some steel pieces to paint. I use the same type of etch as for concrete prep. Phosphoric acid. This does a great job, and the metal comes out incredably clean. The problem is, as soon as you wash off the acid, the water that you use to wash it off with, causes the metal to start rusting instantly, and it's counter-productive to the very reason i'm etching in the first place.

I've always had this issue, and most of the time, it hasn't been too bad, but last night i tried to prep something, and it came out worse than it has before. In the 5 minutes it took for the water to dry, the entire surface has become rusty again.

Anyone have a solution for this?

you need to rinse with a sealer. I have NO idea if there is something available to the average consumer. In the industrial side that I work in we use WestChem E-Clips 2400 but it is only available in 45 gallon drums and not available to the general public...

Ask your local sandblasters that wash what they are using. You might even be able to get a gallon or two off of them???

Try an autobody shop. Most of the products today are self etching, but I recall we used to etch the metal as a seperate step a long time ago and never had a problem with the rust. I don't know what it was but we got it from our local auto body shop in windex sized containers. HTH.

I used some of the RustBlast by KBS Coatings and it works very well.

Hi Wyatt or should I say Ben, Since I assume you haven't taught your Lab to type yet.

I see your still trolling forums under assumed names spamming your new KBS products. If your going to suggest products for users of this forum, and other forums for that matter, why don't you at least come forward and post under your real name and say you work for KBS Coatings?

The users of this forum deserve a lot more respect then your giving them posting under assumed names here like you do your own forums.
