I am staining our patio using Kemiko acid stains (2 colors....tan and black). I also have scored a design in the center of the concrete that the black stain will be used for. My question is do I need to cover up the design during the application of the tan color or do I spray the entire surface tan, wash it off, and then come back and apply the black color to the design?

I am looking to do some acid stain myself here soon.... I have personally never done it so take my advice with a grain of salt, lol.....

from my understanding you need to etch the design, tape it off, then stain it....

then tape off what you have stained and stain around it, dont layer the stains... this is how ive seen it done in videos online...

Please take pictures! I want to see how it comes out!!! :)

Just got in from washing it down. I did a test of the black on top of the light tan and it came out good, so I sprayed the entire slab light brown and then went back with a brush and did the design in black. It came out really nice and I plan to seal tomorrow.

Is there a sure way to tell if it is washed enough? I scrubbed with a mixture of baking soda/water then sprayed straight water on it for about 10 minutes.

I will post pictures of the process once I'm done.
