I am planning on a Rustoleum Professional epoxy floor with flakes and Sharkgrip in the final coat. I know that it is advisable to apply a top coat to protect the flakes and prevent dirt from accumulating around their edges. As an alternative to an epoxy or polyurethane top coat, is it possible to use an acrylic floor wax to protect the flakes and prevent dirt buildup around their edges? If so, what are some recommended products? This is a non-working garage with normal car and people traffic. How often would the wax need to be reapplied under those conditions? Will the Sharkgrip still be effective with wax applied?

No, you don't want to do this for a variety of reasons. One is that it would take quite a few coats to cover the color flakes. The biggest is that acrylic wax needs to be stripped down or at the minimum have layers removed using a buffing machine in order to deep clean the floor. It would be the same process as stripping and rewaxing a VCT floor. This would pull up color flakes and create a mess.

Shaun is correct about protecting the flakes and finish. For the amount of money you would spend in waxing products you can purchase the Rust-Oleum clear coat. Your floor would be down for just one more day and you will be so glad you did it. You might want to read this article about the advantages of a clear coat.
