reciever mount vice. instead of spending $160 for it why not build it?

been lurking the vice thread figuring out make one from scratch. found a bunch of really cool stuff and neat ideas but not much real info on how to make the stuff actually work .

idea is basically a 2 inch tube with a smaller tube fit inside. some half inch plate and an acme screw ? needs to open at least 8 inches for u joint replacement . needs a small flat area for pounding stuff . perhaps idea on how to make pipe jaws ?

with all the smart guys on here what can we come up with ?

For pipe jaws if you don't have a way to machine them you could form them with a die grinder series of triangular files. It won't be fast.

That's a really good idea.

I've replaced many u-joints on the trail. Might get one of these items.

I've seen a post linked here from another forum (for machinists maybe?) where a guy built his totally from scratch. Different type vise, but maybe you could take some ideas from it. His turned out beautifully -- maybe someone in the know could share the link?

would have to get the nut too. big threads like that are hard to tap and expensive.

is any allthread decent strength or is it all like grade 2 generic?

All thread is too soft.
From a junk yard, you would get the entire jack: nuts, screw and all.

I'd think acme or square-cut would work a lot better than generic all-thread.

Standard hitches are 2" ID across. I don't think that thing would be all that hard to build. You can get acme rod for $20-30 on ebay. Pretty easy stuff to find.

Square cut thread.

2x2" tubing should fit right in the receiver.

IDK, is 10+ hours of your time worth $160? That doesn't include material either.

sadly enough laid off so have an abundance of free time till i can find something new. not necessarily about the time or the money its fun for me to build it and even funner when people ask hey where did you get that ? you can respond i built it. no settling for half *** or inadequate build it as beefy and with every option you want .

perrorojo that is the same link as posted before
