Adaptor or special cord?

I am having a 50 amp inlet installed for my generator. The generator has a L14-30R (so a L14-30P is needed). Should I buy/make a cord that is L14-30P on one end and then 14-50R on the other or just get a small adapter that plugs into the inlet and buy/make a L14-30P to L14-30 cord?

THANKS

I am installing the 50AMP so that if in the future I get a bigger generator I am ready. It is a small upcharge now to avoid issues later.

Whichever is cheaper.

If you ever upgrade, just change the inlet. I would not mess around with a bulky adapter for something that might happen.

I did a similar thing a few weeks ago. Installed a standard l14-30 inlet even though the customers 3kw generator only had a l5-30 recepacle. Put a 5-30p on one end of the cord and a 14-30c with the hots jumpered on the other

I have a 7000W generator. It is looking like I need a L14-30P on one end a CS6364 on the other. They sell these, or I could make one.

I did this a few weeks ago when power was out for the better part of 6 hours. I had a 2000W inverter with a 5-15R, so I made a 5-15P to a L14-30R to plug in to my 14-30P inlet. But, I did kill all of the 240V appliances, like the AC compressor, oven, and dryer. Not sure if those would cause issues having 0V between hots, but 120 between hot and neutral / ground.

The odd gotcha was that my inverter refused to run if it detected a bonded ground / neutral.

We were out of power for about 40 hours and neighbors were out 4 days. That was all that was needed to get the wife on board to getting an inlet.
