Add Deadbolt to Fiberglass Door

Hi All,

I have a basic fiberglass door on my pole barn garage and I would like to add an electronic deadbolt (for keyless ease of entry).

The issue is that every deadbolt install kit i see says it's for wood and steel only. All the kits i looked at are roughly the same... bi-metal hole saws and some sort of plastic jig.

Is there a reason I can't use these kits on a fiberglass door? I have not seen a kit that specifically states it 's for use on a fiberglass door.

no reason why they won't work in a fiberglass door . Just make sure when you bore the hole there's backing to keep the skins from pushing inwards when you tighten the lockset. if there's just foam , you'll want to dig some of that out and add some wood (or other) solid . the blocking doesn't have to be all around, a pc at the top & bottom is ample

Locks help keep Honest People Honest, they rarely stop a determined thief.

A Dead Bolt on a fiberglass door can intimidate an amateur.

You can use a drive in latch to eliminate the edge of the door. The only issue I see as a locksmith may be strength of the door. If the skin of the door doesn’t have some strength you will have an issue getting and keeping the lock tight. You can insert wood between the skins or buy a specific item that is designed for this exact issue.

Use the holesaw in reverse untill your thru the skin will keep it from catching and shattering the fiberglass. A stainless steel reinforcement plate wrap will really help with kick in strength.
