I have hung ONE end box off the 5-drawer cart. It can be enough weight to lift the wheels on the other side off the ground. You would have to remove the handle to hang two on opposite sides. It should work. The only issue is that the top won't close with an end box hanging on the cart, without modifying (cutting) the lid...

Other than that, it should work. Not quite sure why you would (end boxes are relatively expensive there. They are well built and worth $200 each, but not the largest box with the smallest price at HF by any means.

I actually have the end box 'free standing' now, as an independent set of drawers, on a base cabinet I got for $10 at a hospital equipment sale...

But why? you're way over the price of a bottom with less space. $200 +$200 + $169
the actual sq in (not cu in) space if you add up the drawers alone from the cart and 2 7 drawer boxes is over 100 more sq in than the 44 in roller.
then add the area under the lid of the cart which is another 484.5 and then add the area of the bottom tray of 559.171875 you end up with lots of storage.
i paid 159 for my cart and will have a little over a hundred each in the side boxes.
i still have the big chest(might slap some side boxes on it too) w/top box to store larger and more specialized tools in.

i think the cart system with boxes will be easier to maneuver.

what i wanna do with the cart is load one end box w/metric, the other w/SAE and have the cart house screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, pliers, ratchets, extensions and all the other things that are not metric/SAE specific.

If you want to move it a lot, I'd consider attaching the end cabinets to the cart better (a couple of bolts near the bottom).

If you want your lid to close, you will want need to modify the lid. The lip of the end box, which goes over the edge of the cabinet, keeps the lid from closing. You could also build brackets on the side to hold the end boxes...a piece of 1/8" flat bar, with a flat bar spacer would let you hang the end box like it is designed, then use spacers and bolts at the bottom to make it plumb with the rest of the box. In fact, I'm pretty sure that is the way I would go: build a bracket of with flat bar material to attach the end box to the side of the cart. Attach the flat bar bracket to the side of the box with countersunk machine screws and put another piece of flat bar on the inside as a backer. paint it with rattle-can red and nobody will know any different.

You will likely want to attach the handles on the end box on the non-steering-caster end of the box.

Based on the casters on my 5-drawer cart, I'm pretty sure they will handle the weight you are talking about. With the wheels more to the center, it will tend to steer better, but you may have a problem with it being a little 'tippy.'

If you got those end boxes for just over $100, then you got a steal. I could only get them down to $150 for an end box who's keys were locked inside it. Those are definitely worth the price, even at $200. If I wasn't planning on building my own, custom tool box, I'd seriously be considering a couple more of those.

If you need to lock your tool storage, call HF customer service and order a set of 'keyed-alike' locks to replace the locks on your cart and cabinets. For a few bucks, you can stop fiddling with multiple keys to lock up. Of course, you could also enclose the bottom space with sheet metal and make a door for the front and get an extra lock for it too.

Post pics! I want to see this.

single key locking is not a huge concern. i have modified the cart so i have the option of the right and/or left locks for the drawers to engage or not.

i had considered spacing the end boxes out so the lid would close. hadnt settled on an exact plan yet.

the casters were my main concern, but an easy fix if they fail.

i would run two pieces of about 2x2 angle iron underneath the cart and extend out to support the two side boxes...just try to keep the heavier tools in the cart and lighter tools in the side boxes if you can.

Unless you get those end boxes for a really good price, just buy another 44" roller. . .it's on sale soon for $349. That's less than 2 end cabinets and I don't see those on sale very often.

welll here is an update... a change in plans..
One of my favorite salvage stores had these http://www.sears.com/craftsman-6-dr...ispla=00959606000P&sid=IDx20131030xMPAPxCPA28 Craftsmans for 124.99 each.
It was a day of certain sales they throw occasionally and I got them for $93.75 each.
New plan is for placing most of my socket sets and wrenches on portable and/or magnetic holders and flanking the side boxes onto my HF 42 inch roller using one for metric stuff and one from standard stuff.
I will keep my ratchets, extensions, pliers and some screwdrivers in the HF red cart.
When I work on something, usually on the lift, I will toss the correct format of sockets & wrench sets in the top of the HF cart and roll it under the car.
As you know I was gonna flank them onto the cart but it made the cart a little too cumbersome.
So far i have $159.99 in the cart, $300 in the 42 inch roller, & $187.50 in the side boxes. I cant remember what i paid for my Craftsman top box http://www.summitracing.com/parts/shc-959614?seid=srese1&gclid=CMmK46O8vL4CFRQmMgodh3gAAg at the same salvage store. I think it was $45 or $65
Gotta knock some dents out first but it should be pretty sweet when its all done.
