It's been a good week.....getting some things done....

Some may recall the drill press table I made a few months ago....well, I finished the drawer for it....it's 12"W x 24"D x 6"H...16g stainless steel....

Now I have a place to store my drill bits......and other misc junk....

I really like using the full extension slides.....

BTW.....only broke one tap on the ss.....and no, it did not come out....just drill a different hole....

great work, I like your vise in the background. I have the same one except it's swivel base was broken when I salvaged it.

That's just downright clever! Great job.

But I don't think I could get away with that on my floor model drill...

Thanks guys.......

Great job, but it looks like you have room for two more large drawers, or possibly a combination of smaller drawers, down below.

Actually.....the space below is reseverd for the welding table I'm building....It's about 1" shorter than the cross member on the side of the drill press stand....that way I can roll it under the table when I'm not using it.

Here is a pic of it....upside down while I weld on the legs.....
The top is 1" plate...24"x24"....weighs about 164 lbs.....without legs.....

Ok......question for you guys......

What should I do with the inside of the drawer? I'm thinking about spraying the inside with Plastidip....I'm also considering just getting some of the liquid Plastidip and just pouring it into the bottom to create a nice rubber bottom.

Other suggestions?

Nice work.
The Plastidip stuff is nice for short duration from what I have experienced. Maybe get a quart can of the roll on bed liner stuff. I believe it is tougher and should give you close to the same sound / padded results as the Plastidip.

I would just use some drawer liner. This stuff from Horrible Freight works good:
http://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-x-72-inch-mesh-nonslip-drawer-liner-67055.html

Oil and cutting fluid will drain through it. It can be removed and cleaned or replaced easily.

Were those full length slides an engineering sample perhaps? ;)

Nope....bought them today at HD....24" full extension....$16

I have some of the HF drawer liner....it's ok except it shifts around.....

I've had real good luck with the Plastidip.....the cover over my trany/xfer case in the jeep is painted with it....did it about 10 years ago....still looks good...

I will remember those slides next time I need some. The last time I priced out some triple extension slides they were over $100. So I have not planned on using them around the house. I guess global trade is good for some stuff.

The HF drawer material I have has stuck fairly well. Maybe batches are different??? HF quality control leaves a LOT to be desired.

I just bought a stand like yours for a saw. I plan on mounting two 6" wheels on one side and using rubber caps under the other two legs. That way it is easily transportable, even up and down stairs. The saw is not nearly as heavy as your drill press. HF seems to be coming out with a new universal stand made of thinner metal with a couple slabs of MDF to stiffen it up. I may just go down and buy another stand like I have for a grinder. I have even thought about building a cabinet with slots like your parts drawers with places to keep different tool "heads" that I can drop on a stand when needed.

My main drill press is mounted on an old electric dryer base. The drawer in the front leads to a shelf with tooling and fixtures. It is not nearly as handy as a drawer.

Hey Ddawg...just a suggestion, add another set of rails to the top of the drawer, then if you have any weight in it, it won't sag or break/bow the single bottom rail.

Fantastic job BTW

I just notice too, that is not just a drill press, but a mill/drill press combo. What brand, and how do you like it? I'd like to pick something like that up for my garage.

The slides are rated for 75lbs I think.....If I have that much weight in there.....it's too much ****....

The drill press is another story......and I have OccupantRJ to thanks for it...

I was in Kenston NC last year....spending a Sunday with Occupant RJ and one of his friends....looking at garages/workshops (RJ has a NICE one). Anyway, I make a comment about wanting a table top drill press....RJ's friend says he has one I may like....shows this to me....it's sitting on the floor of his office.....he bought it new to turn into a mini CNC xy....had the servos....but for lack of time and loss of interest....was no longer pursuing it....sold it to me for $150....the head is cast iron....

SOB is heavy...almost 200 lbs....started calling around....it was going to cost me more to ship it back to California....so, being the cheap ******* I am....I took it apart.....brought it back with me on the airplane as checked luggage...took 3 trips.....I was able to break it down so that each box weighed 50lbs or less....didn't cost me a cent except for the tape to wrape it up with. It helps to be silver on US Scare...I can check 2 bags for free....

So....that is how I ended up with a drill press with an xy table for $150 bought on the east coast....

Love the thing...I didn't realize how much I needed one.....even my wife likes it.

That's quite the story on getting the xy table back - you're as lucky as you are crafty ddawg!
I'd weld a couple cleats to either side and put in a shelf, maybe half way back? Then you could store longer/heavier stuff (spare chuck, etc) on botton and smaller stuff (bits, wrenches) on top. Put a forward lip in shelf to stop stuff from falling off when closed.

John, I used some Herculiner on the back and bottom of my tool box when I repainted it. Now that I type this, I rolled it into the drawers of the orange side box too. I bought it at TSC, I'm not sure if you have them in Cali.

Did you weld the stainless ?

I've used Herc on my jeep.....I would consider that if they had a version without grit in it.....but, yes, we have Heculiner....

Yes....stainless is welded.....I have access to a TIG welder........I find stainless easier to TIG than steel....heat transfer of ss is shity compared to steel....so it's easier to get and maintain the puddle....

I'd like to know more about how you made the drawer. I'm in the contemplation and where the heck am I going to get the money for this stage of making metal drawers for my workbench. It looks like yours came out nice and straight and true. Did you use a brake? I don't have access to a TIG so I planned on mig welding 16 gauge metal. I'm still worried about warpage.

Nice looking setup!

I'm lucky in that I have access to a brake.....a rather BIG brake....as in 10' wide......

The shear is 12'....

And the plasma cutter is next to it.....

Real easy to make....take a 24" x 24" sheet of ss.....make 2 bends...6" on each side....use the shear to make 2 12"x6" end caps.....weld....

It was more work drilling and taping the holes for the slides.....

MIG works....just make sure you have the right wire....SS wire is not cheap.

Nice thing about TIG...you can weld things without using wire...worked really well in this case....I did the welding on the outside so I basically sacraficed the metal on the edge to fill in any voids...then ground to a smooth finish....

Oh...THAT vice....

It was given to me a few years ago....I was trying to decide if I should leave it as is...or clean it up....I don't think I'll repaint it....just drop it in vinegar...get all the rust off and give it a good soaking in WD40 to seal the metal.
