Added a helping hand to the shop

Finished building my latest project yesterday. A gantry crane. Light duty, but perfect for what I need. All steel is 1/4 inch 2x2 and 2x3 square/rectangular tubing, 275#ea poly swivel casters, 275# ea cast iron casters for the trolly, and a cheapo 440lb Harbor Freight special hoist.

Immediately put it to use with the next project, a cargo box for the pickup for winter traveling Im already addicted to it. Makes things way to easy to position and move. Ill never have to lift anything heavy again

Still have a few provisions to add to it, but it is together, and functional!

I have a much larger portable gantry crane, but I do like the idea of one. You should get some good use from yours on moderately heavy items that you cannot otherwise deal with yourself.

Get yourself an assortment of chains, heavy S hooks, straps, small clevis's and such. Nothing like having the right thing to grab something with.

Didn't have to fab this one, just drive 1800 miles to get it home and then assemble it. Pic is one seller posted on Ebay before I bought it from him.

Here's one I built a few years ago. I had a pile of 3" schedule 80 pipe that an elevator mechanic friend gave me, some 3/8" plate, and a big tig welder. My dad did the design. This was really useful when I worked in my driveway in front of the carport. Unfortunately it's too tall to fit in the garage of my new house, so now it lives in a friend's shop, where the ceiling is plenty tall. He uses it to hang stuff that he's painting. He uses a lot of pink, so my big burly gantry is now a nice shade of pink.
