Hello! I'm new to the garage journal as of today. I'm wanting to put 2 220v outlets out in my garage. I need one for my air compressor and I have 10/2 wire and a 30 amp breaker for this and one for my welder and I have 6/2 wire and a 50 amp breaker for this. 2 separate runs ok or is there something that is probably easier? Thanks for any help.

Detached garage? If so, you need to go out with one feed and then split off from a panel there ( only one feed to a building allowed)

If attached, it may still be easier to go with one feed and put a small panel rather than running direct, up to you.

Garage is attached to the house. I'd probably have to run a 6/3 wire to have a panel out there.

Do one feed to a subpanel then run your individual circuits from there.

It will be cheaper this way.

Where is your main panel?

Main panel is in the basement, garage is about 16' away.

So run something like #4-4-4-6 AL SER or #2-2-2-4 AL SER which will give 70a or 90a respectively.

put in a small subpanel making sure to isolate the neutral bar which most likely means buying a ground bar kit.

What is the HP rating on the compressor?

At 16 ft it would depend on my need for space, if I had plenty in the main simply run 2 wires. As long as it's not a 250 mig it can be 10 cable for the welder. If it's a 200 mig a 30A will work, if you want to use a buzzer it needs a 50A.

Air compressor is a puma 6 gal 3.2 hp 230v / 1hp and the welder is a lincoln 225 arc welder. The compressor says the breaker size (trip rating) for circuit breaker is 35A, for fusible switch (melting style) the 30A dual element time delay fuses are suggested. The welder calls for a 50A.

How far off the floor does a sub panel need to be?

Both those will run from 10 cable.

2 runs are for you. There isn't easier way.

How bout this. Put a sub panal next to main panal run wires from there out to garage. Work! I don't have enough breaker space to put in 35A and a 50A breaker.

So why not run one large feeder to new subpanel in garage?

This will enable u to add circuits down the road should u expand
